Global Engineering Talent is seeking a Senior Electrical Design Engineer for a building services consultancy in London. Based at Kings Cross, you will lead electrical design across hotels and commercial projects, collaborating with clients and consultants to deliver high-quality designs.

Senior Electrical Design Engineer – Building Services

Kings Cross, London | Contract | Up to £50 per hour

An established Building Services consultancy is strengthening its London presence following a period of continued project success and is now looking to appoint a Senior Electrical Design Engineer.

Based from a new office in Kings Cross, you will become a key member of the London operation, delivering technically strong electrical designs while helping the wider team build an effective and successful office.

About the opportunity

The consultancy has been established for eight years and is now well positioned for its next stage of development. Its longer-term plan is to grow into a £6 million consultancy over the next three to five years, creating opportunities for capable people to develop alongside the business.

This is not a contract where you will simply be given a series of isolated design tasks. The successful engineer will be trusted to take responsibility for projects, work directly with clients and consultants, and help drive delivery from the London office.

As a Director will not be based there full-time, you must be a confident and dependable engineer who can manage priorities, make sound technical decisions and keep work moving without needing close day-to-day supervision.

What you will be doing

Working across a varied portfolio that includes hotels and commercial developments, your responsibilities will include:

• Developing electrical Building Services designs from concept through to detailed design
• Designing LV distribution, lighting, emergency lighting, small power and containment systems
• Producing designs for fire alarms, security, data, communications and other associated systems
• Completing electrical load assessments, cable-sizing, voltage-drop and discrimination calculations
• Preparing specifications, schedules, technical reports and design documentation
• Producing and reviewing electrical drawings and coordinated design information
• Working closely with mechanical engineers, architects, structural engineers and other project stakeholders
• Representing the consultancy during client, design-team and site meetings
• Resolving technical issues and identifying potential design risks
• Supporting less-experienced engineers as the London team expands
• Contributing to the systems, standards and working culture of the new office

What we need from you

You should have:

• Substantial electrical design experience within the Building Services sector
• A strong consultancy or MEP design background
• The ability to independently lead the electrical design of projects
• Experience delivering work across multiple RIBA stages
• Strong knowledge of BS 7671, UK Building Regulations, CIBSE guidance and other relevant standards
• Detailed experience with LV distribution, lighting, emergency lighting, small power and life-safety systems
• Experience using electrical calculation software such as Amtech or Trimble
• Competence with lighting-design software such as DIALux
• Experience with AutoCAD, with Revit experience highly beneficial
• A degree, HNC, HND or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Professional fluency in English
• The confidence to communicate effectively with clients and multidisciplinary design teams
• The flexibility to attend sites throughout London and occasionally visit the Peterborough headquarters

Chartered status, or progress towards professional registration, would be advantageous but is not essential.

Technical ability is essential, but the consultancy is equally interested in how you work.

You will need to be proactive, accountable and comfortable taking ownership. The position would suit a senior engineer who feels ready for greater responsibility and wants the opportunity to influence the development of an office, rather than remaining one person within a large established team.

Although the engagement is on a contract basis, the business wants someone who will approach the position with a long-term mindset and become a trusted part of its future growth.

• Rate: Up to £50 per hour
• Primary base: Kings Cross, London
• Travel: Project sites across London, with occasional visits to the Peterborough headquarters
• Initial term: Three months
• Longer-term opportunity: The intention is to offer a 12-month contract with two months' notice following a successful initial period
• Required start date: No later than 1 November
• Future incentive: Potential eligibility for a performance-related bonus after 12 months of service, subject to final terms
