Job summary

Automation Experts in Worcestershire is seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Design Engineer to lead Electrical, Instrumentation, Control & Automation designs on high-value engineering projects. You will provide hands-on technical leadership, develop schematics, load schedules and technical specs while guiding multiple concurrent projects.

Responsibilities

• Lead development of Electrical, Instrumentation, Control & Automation designs.
• Produce load schedules, schematics, SLDs and specifications.
• Design control architectures with PLCs, SCADA, instrumentation and drives.
• Interpret P&IDs, mechanical drawings and equipment data.
• Carry out electrical assessments incl. earthing, cable sizing and protection.
• Produce wiring diagrams and as-built information.
• Manage EICA scope across multiple projects.
• Review designs for safety, compliance and maintainability.
• Support installation, commissioning and FAT/SAT activities.
• Provide technical guidance and mentor junior engineers.

An established engineering business is looking for an experienced Lead Electrical Design Engineer to join its growing team, working on complex, high-value engineered projects for major customers.

This is a hands‑on technical leadership position, combining electrical design, instrumentation, control and automation with project delivery.

The Role

• Leading the development of Electrical, Instrumentation, Control & Automation (EICA) designs
• Producing and reviewing electrical calculations, load schedules, schematics, Single Line Diagrams, cable schedules and technical specifications
• Designing electrical and control systems incorporating PLCs, SCADA, instrumentation, motors, pumps and drives
• Developing control architectures and interpreting P&IDs, mechanical drawings and equipment data
• Carrying out electrical assessments covering supply characteristics, earthing, cable sizing and protection
• Producing electrical layouts, interconnection drawings, wiring documentation and as‑built information
• Managing the electrical/EICA scope across multiple concurrent projects
• Reviewing designs for safety, compliance, maintainability and buildability
• Supporting technical specifications, material selection, BOMs and procurement
• Supporting FAT, panel witness testing, installation, commissioning and SAT
• Carrying out site surveys and inspections and providing technical support during installation
• Troubleshooting electrical, control and instrumentation issues and resolving technical queries

The Person

We're looking for an experienced Electrical Design Engineer who has developed their career within a complex engineering, manufacturing, industrial, process or automation environment.

• Strong electrical design engineering experience
• Proven PLC/SCADA and automation experience
• Experience with instrumentation and process/control systems
• Experience designing electrical systems for complex engineered equipment
• Strong understanding of electrical schematics, P&IDs, SLDs and cable schedules
• Experience with electrical calculations, load schedules and protection
• Knowledge of BS 7671 and relevant machinery, electrical and workplace safety legislation
• Understanding of the Electricity at Work Regulations, PUWER, EMC requirements and CDM
• Experience supporting installation and commissioning
• Strong fault‑finding and troubleshooting ability
• Experience working across multiple projects and coordinating engineering inputs
• Ability to provide technical guidance and mentor less experienced engineers
• HNC/HND, NVQ Level 3 or equivalent electrical engineering qualification
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and engineering documentation systems
• Experience with NanoCAD, AutoCAD, Amtech, Trimble ProDesign or similar would be advantageous. Experience within automotive, aerospace, industrial automation, process engineering, complex machinery, utilities or other high‑value manufacturing environments would be particularly relevant.

You’ll join a growing engineering operation where there is genuine scope to take technical ownership, lead from the front and contribute to the development of the wider engineering function. The business offers a compressed working week, with an early finish on Fridays, alongside a strong pipeline of future growth.

Located in Worcestershire, this role would be commutable from Worcester, Kidderminster, Redditch, Bromsgrove, Alcester, Stourbridge, Droitwich Spa, Evesham, Halesowen, Birmingham, Stratford‑upon‑Avon and Solihull.
