Job summary

London Borough of Barnet is seeking an experienced Environment Health and Safety Manager to lead H&S across the Environment Directorate, covering waste, streets, highways, and street lighting. You will advise senior managers, monitor compliance and drive improvements.

Working in a hybrid arrangement with the Directorate, you will develop policies, conduct risk assessments, lead investigations and train managers to cultivate a strong safety culture throughout the council.

Qualifications

• Chartered IOSH (CMIOSH) status.
• Strong knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and its application.
• Experience giving health and safety guidance to managers and senior stakeholders.
• Experience undertaking complex risk assessments and managing workplace risks.
• Knowledge of health and safety management systems, compliance monitoring and auditing.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Experience developing policies, procedures and safe systems of work.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Environment Directorate’s health and safety strategy and ensure legal compliance.
• Provide expert advice on legislation, risks and best practice to directors and operational teams.
• Oversee risk assessments and develop control measures and safe systems of work.
• Lead investigations into serious accidents and incidents and ensure corrective actions.
• Monitor contractor H&S compliance across services and audits.
• Develop and review H&S policies, procedures and management systems.
• Monitor H&S performance and report trends to senior management.
• Deliver health and safety training and coach managers.
• Support improvement projects and external accreditation processes.
• Line-manage the Street Scene Health and Safety Officer and promote a safety culture.
