Job description

We are seeking a proactive and experienced Senior Ecologist to lead ecological surveys, assessments, and reports to support planning applications. The Senior Ecologist will provide expert advice on habitat management, protected species, biodiversity mitigation and compliance with environmental legislation.

Responsibilities

• Lead ecological surveys and assessments, including Phase 1 Habitat Surveys, protected species surveys, and ecological appraisals.
• Prepare high‑quality Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs), Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) reports, and mitigation strategies.
• Provide expert advice on biodiversity, habitat management, and legislative compliance.
• Liaise with clients, local authorities, and statutory consultees.
• Mentor and support junior ecologists, contributing to their professional development.
• Stay current with ecological best practice, legislation and industry guidance.
• Attend site visits and stakeholder meetings.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Senior Ecologist.
• Strong knowledge of UK ecology, protected species, habitat types and relevant legislation (e.g. Wildlife & Countryside Act, Habitats Regulations).
• Experience in producing ecological reports independently.
• Relevant qualifications (BSc/MSc Ecology or related discipline).
• Membership of professional bodies such as CIEEM is preferred.
• Valid UK driving licence.
• Strong project management and report‑writing skills.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to manage projects independently.
