Job description

Lead NIHR’s digital content strategy – where health research meets digital innovation.

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is seeking 2 Senior Digital Content Managers to contribute to shaping and delivering our digital content strategy. These roles are hosted within our Southampton coordinating centre.

Who are we?

The NIHR funds, enables, and delivers world-leading health and social care research that improves people's health and wellbeing and promotes economic growth. We are also a major funder of applied health research in low and middle-income countries.

Further information can be found at: www.nihr.ac.uk. You are encouraged to review our operational priorities and to watch this introductory video.

What You’ll Be Doing

Working as part of the NIHR’s central communications team, and under the direction of the NIHR Head of Digital Communications, we’re looking for strategic, forward-thinking content experts to help take the reins of our central web platform. You’ll lead on digital content planning, delivery, and optimisation, act as a Business Product Owner for key digital services, and work collaboratively across NIHR to drive consistency, impact, and user-focused innovation.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Lead the production and management of high-quality, accessible content across the NIHR web platform.
  • Help steer the evolution of our CMS and related digital products.
  • Own and coordinate content plans and workflows, embedding best practice and aligning with NIHR’s wider communications goals.
  • Use data and user insights to inform decisions, drive performance, and lead improvements.
  • Guide and support a community of content creators, embedding consistent editorial standards and SEO strategy.
  • Work closely with senior stakeholders to shape our digital roadmap and ensure alignment with broader service development.

Who are we looking for?

Required

You’ll confidently balance strategic thinking with hands-on content delivery, bringing strong editorial judgment, stakeholder management skills, and a passion for user-focused, continuously improving content. Additional skills required include:

  • Extensive experience in digital content management and strategy, including SEO and content performance analytics.
  • Advanced knowledge of CMS platforms (Drupal preferred), with a strong grasp of web accessibility and content governance.
  • Experience leading strategic content planning and managing editorial calendars across multiple digital channels.
  • Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills, with the ability to advise and collaborate across functions and levels.

Experience working in complex or public sector organisations, health and research sectors, and with digital tools like HotJar, Figma, and Google Analytics would be highly beneficial.

What can we offer you?

Benefits

As well as knowing you are working in a role that will make a real-world positive impact, there are many additional benefits to joining our centre in Southampton including:

  • Flexible Hybrid working arrangements - around 20% of your time would be spent in the office.
  • Generous annual leave entitlement of 44 days per year (made up of 30 days annual leave, plus Bank holidays, plus university closure days).
