Rolls-Royce SMR Limited is seeking a specialist Mechanical Engineer to lead the specification, integration and delivery of large‑scale diesel generator systems. You will work closely with suppliers and internal stakeholders to define requirements, review designs and ensure safe, reliable back‑up power solutions for a highly regulated nuclear program.
With at least five years in engineering, including experience with emergency diesel generators or back‑up power systems, you will apply governance
At Rolls‑Royce SMR, we are transforming the future of clean energy by developing next‑generation nuclear technology that will deliver reliable, low‑carbon power for generations to come. As part of our growing organisation, you will help solve complex engineering challenges that support energy security, sustainability and global net zero ambitions.
You will join our Plant Equipment Engineering team as we continue to build specialist capability across key technical disciplines. Working within a multidisciplinary environment, you will collaborate with engineers, programme teams, suppliers and stakeholders to deliver critical backup power solutions that support the Rolls‑Royce SMR programme.
This is a specialist engineering position focused on Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) and Ultimate Diesel Generator (UDG) systems rather than general plant equipment. You will provide technical leadership across the specification, integration, design and delivery of large‑scale diesel generator systems, helping to ensure safe, reliable and compliant backup power solutions within a highly regulated environment.
Lead the specification, integration and delivery of diesel generator systems and associated fuel, lubrication and oil system equipment. Work closely with suppliers and internal stakeholders to develop requirements, review designs and ensure technical solutions meet programme needs. Provide subject matter expertise on EDG and UDG systems, supporting complex engineering decisions and resolving technical challenges. Apply appropriate governance, quality standards and engineering best practice throughout the product lifecycle. Support programme delivery by managing risks, driving technical maturity and collaborating across multiple engineering disciplines.
A degree, HND or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline. At least five years of engineering experience, including direct involvement with emergency diesel generators, backup power systems or similar critical infrastructure. Experience designing, specifying, integrating, procuring or overseeing large‑scale diesel generator systems and supporting equipment. Technical expertise gained within nuclear, power generation, marine, industrial power or data centre environments would be highly valued. The credibility to operate as a recognised technical specialist, coupled with strong collaboration and stakeholder management skills.
The salary band for this role will be between £50,650 – £66,500 dependent on the skills, values and knowledge you bring. There may be flexibility with the starting salary in exceptional cases, and the role may develop further as the programme grows.
