About the Opportunity

We are recruiting for an experienced Senior Design Manager to join a leading UK infrastructure contractor delivering a major high-voltage substation project in Motherwell, Scotland.

This is an excellent opportunity for an electrically biased Design Manager to take a senior leadership role, overseeing multidisciplinary design teams and managing complex electrical design packages throughout the project lifecycle.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in HV substations, electricity transmission or electrical infrastructure, with the ability to lead design delivery from tender stage through detailed design and construction.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary design teams across HV substation projects.
• Oversee electrical design packages, including primary plant, secondary systems, protection and control.
• Manage interfaces between electrical, civil, structural and construction disciplines.
• Develop and manage design programmes, resource plans and technical deliverables.
• Lead design reviews, technical workshops and engineering coordination meetings.
• Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, client specifications and safety requirements.
• Manage design governance, technical assurance, risk, change control and quality.
• Work closely with engineering, construction and commissioning teams to support successful delivery.
• Support tender activities, design budgets and value engineering initiatives.
• Manage relationships with clients, external consultants and subcontractors.

Requirements

Essential:

• Strong electrical engineering background, supported by relevant qualifications or equivalent experience.
• Proven design management experience within HV substations, electricity transmission or major electrical infrastructure projects.
• Good technical understanding of electrical substation design, including primary and secondary systems.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and managing external design consultants.
• Strong understanding of design coordination, technical compliance, programme management and design governance.
• Excellent leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable:

• Experience delivering 132kV, 275kV or 400kV substation projects.
• Familiarity with National Grid, SSEN or other UK transmission and distribution network operators.
• Experience supporting tender, construction and commissioning phases.
• Professional engineering accreditation or relevant industry membership.
