Job summary

Morson Edge is seeking a Senior Design Manager for its North Midlands/Yorkshire region, split between Derbyshire head office and Leeds regional office. You’ll oversee design from pre-construction to site delivery on DfE school replacement projects, ensuring compliance with Employer's Requirements and your contractor standards.

You will lead the design team, coordinate with clients and authorities, and drive value engineering while managing CDM and BIM processes across projects.

Qualifications

• Proven track record on DfE school replacement projects in pre-construction and on-site.
• Strong knowledge of DfE CF21 Employer's Requirements and process.
• Experience managing specialist designing subcontractors.
• Solid technical/building knowledge with CDM understanding.
• Understanding of cost control, detailed design, programme and contracts.

Responsibilities

• Lead design team through pre-construction and construction ensuring compliance.
• Act as Building Regulations Principal Designer and coordinate on higher-risk buildings.
• Lead design reviews, option analysis and value engineering.
• Contribute to ITT and contractor proposal submissions.
• Manage RFIs, change control and design programme coordination with planner.
• Be primary design contact for client, consultants, subcontractors and authorities.
• Lead CDM, BIM processes, document management, and embodied carbon considerations.

Senior Design Manager | Leeds and Derbyshire | Tier 1 Main Contractor | DfE Schools

Morson Edge is recruiting a Senior Design Manager for a privately owned, family-run Tier 1 main contractor, one of the most financially secure in UK construction.

The business is strengthening its presence in Yorkshire and growing its regional design team, on the back of a strong pipeline of Department for Education school replacement projects. The role covers its North Midlands and Yorkshire region, split between head office in Derbyshire and the regional office in Leeds.

The role

You’ll make sure the design intent is properly managed on DfE school projects, reviewing, interrogating and managing the design from pre-construction through to delivery on site.

What you’ll do

• Lead the design team through pre-construction and construction, keeping designs compliant with the DfE Employer's Requirements and the contractor's own standardised school solution
• Act as Building Regulations Principal Designer under the Building Safety Act, coordinating designs and designers, including on higher-risk buildings where appointed
• Lead design reviews, option analysis and value engineering
• Contribute to PITT, ITT and contractor's proposal submissions
• Run the RFI, change and document control processes, and feed into the design programme with the planner
• Be the point of contact on design for the client, consultants, designing subcontractors and statutory bodies, and set each designer's scope of duties
• Lead CDM compliance, the BIM process, document management in Viewpoint 4P, and embodied carbon and Building Control requirements

What you’ll bring

• A proven track record on DfE school replacement projects, in both pre-construction and on site
• Robust knowledge of the DfE CF21 Employer's Requirements and process
• Experience managing specialist designing subcontractors
• Strong technical and building knowledge, and a sound understanding of design obligations and CDM
• An understanding of cost control, detailed design, programme and contractual requirements
• BIM software such as Revit, Navisworks or Solibri
