Job summary

Collins Aerospace is seeking a Senior Design Engineer in Wolverhampton to lead the design and development of electric actuation systems from concept through production and in-service support.

You will drive innovative concepts, support cross-disciplinary teams, and ensure solutions meet regulatory and customer requirements. The role involves travel to collaborate with teams and customers and mentoring junior engineers.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience in a design engineering environment.
  • Strong understanding of machine design and electro-mechanical product development.
  • Experience developing mechanical/electro-mechanical systems across product lifecycle.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop electric actuation systems from concept to production.
  • Generate innovative design concepts and configurations for electro-mechanical actuation systems.
  • Lead design activities within multidisciplinary teams and produce manufacturing data packages.
  • Ensure compliance with customer, regulatory and in-service requirements.
  • Support risk management and design assurance activities.

Overview

Collins Aerospace is a global leader in technologically advanced and intelligent solutions for the aerospace and defence industry. This is a new role within Collins to support the ASG electric thrust reverser actuation centre of excellence, located in Wolverhampton. Reporting to the ASG-UK Site Lead – Chief Engineer, you will provide technical leadership and design authority for electric actuation systems from concept through to production and in-service support.

What You Will Do
  • As a Senior Design Engineer, design and develop electric actuation systems and associated subsystems, supporting projects from concept through to manufacture and qualification.
  • Generate innovative design concepts and product configurations for electro‑mechanical actuation systems.
  • Support all stages of the design lifecycle, including requirements capture, proposals, detailed design, manufacture, and qualification.
  • Develop robust, lightweight, and cost-effective engineering solutions.
  • Produce high-quality manufacturing data packages, including drawings and tolerance analyses.
  • Lead and support detailed design activities within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Ensure compliance with customer, regulatory, and in-service requirements.
  • Support system integration and installation activities across actuation systems and interfacing equipment.
  • Conduct design reviews and deliver technical presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support risk identification, risk mitigation, and design assurance activities.
  • Investigate product issues during development, qualification, production, and in-service operation; support failure investigations and corrective action programs.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers, graduates, and placement students.
  • Support technology roadmap development and future capability growth initiatives.
  • Collaborate with global engineering teams to share best practices and drive continuous improvement.
  • Engage with customers and pursue new business opportunities. The role may involve travel to collaborate with teams and customers.
What You Must Have
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering qualification.
  • Demonstrated experience in a design engineering environment.
  • Strong understanding of machine design and electro‑mechanical product development.
  • Experience developing mechanical or electro‑mechanical systems throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Proven problem‑solving and analytical skills.
  • Experience supporting technical investigations and root cause analysis activities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Strong organisational and planning skills with attention to detail.
  • Passion for engineering excellence, innovation, and continuous development.
Desirable Experience
  • Experience using CATIA CAD software.
  • Experience using Teamcenter PLM systems.
  • Aerospace product development experience.
  • Experience supporting qualification and certification programmes.
  • Knowledge of aerospace actuation systems and aircraft equipment design.
