Collins Aerospace is a global leader in technologically advanced and intelligent solutions for the aerospace and defence industry. This is an exciting new role within Collins and a unique opportunity to be part of the ASG electric thrust reverser actuation centre of excellence, working as part of a team of technical innovators in the development of new technologies to position the business for success on next generation of aerospace nacelle actuation. The position will be located within a new bespoke facility in Wolverhampton.

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Principal Electric Systems Engineer – Motor drives to join our team in Wolverhampton. Reporting to ASG-UK Site Lead – Chief Engineer, you will provide technical leadership and act as the authority for motor drive development activities and for the development of advanced motor drive systems supporting aerospace actuation applications.

What You Will Do

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide technical leadership for the design, development and verification of motor drive systems, including power electronics, control electronics, converter topologies and motor control algorithms.
  • Own the technical architecture and design decisions for motor drive products throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Lead and coordinate technical activities across electronics, software, firmware and test engineering related to motor drive activities.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical and systems leads to integrate the motor drive controller subsystem into the overall actuation architecture.
  • Develop robust requirements and support the development of risk and change control processes for the motor drive subsystem and lead subsystem-level design reviews.
  • Lead validation, verification, and testing plan implementation for the motor drive controller subsystem, ensuring integration with the overall actuation system.
  • Monitor emerging technologies and competitor IP, advocating innovative approaches within the motor drive subsystem to enhance differentiation.
  • Champion evidence-based engineering for the motor drive subsystem, leading the use of digital simulation, root-cause analysis, and design-of-experiments for performance validation.
  • Generate electronics design definition and justification data to describe the design solutions and the rationale behind.
  • Manage ambiguity within subsystem-level decisions using robust risk and change control frameworks.
  • Participate in design reviews, failure investigations and root-cause analysis activities.
  • Participate in defining technical work packages, priorities and development plans, to ensure successful execution against programme objectives.
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for motor drive technologies within the organization.
  • Support technology roadmaps and identify opportunities for innovation, product differentiation and performance improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with aerospace development processes, certification requirements and engineering best practices.
  • Foster technical excellence and knowledge sharing across the organisation.
  • Support customer interactions, technical presentations and design reviews with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with programme management to identify, assess and mitigate technical risks.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives, standardisation and the development of engineering methodologies and tools.

The role will be based in a new Collins Aerospace facility in Wolverhampton, UK, with <20% international travel.

What You Must Have
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Control Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience designing, developing and verifying motor drive systems and power electronic converters.
  • Strong expertise in power electronics design, including inverter topologies, gate drive circuits, switch-mode power supplies, analogue and digital electronics.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and systems-thinking capabilities.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with engineering teams, customers, programme leadership and certification bodies.
  • A proactive and innovative mindset with a passion for developing differentiated engineering solutions.
