Job summary

Solid Talent is recruiting a Senior Design Engineer for its West Yorkshire NPD team. You will lead design delivery from specification to manufacture, using first-principles engineering on high-speed machinery. You’ll create robust concepts, conduct FMEA, and drive IP opportunities while coordinating across engineering disciplines.

The role involves CAD modelling (NX/SolidWorks), BOM control, and rigorous test planning, with occasional site travel to support trials and supplier engagements.

Qualifications

• Proven track record as Senior Mechanical Design Engineer leading complex NPD projects.
• Strong first-principles mechanical engineering knowledge for high-speed machinery.
• Experience with GD&T and BOMs; FMEA application across projects.
• Proficient in 3D CAD platforms (NX/SolidWorks) and cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Act as a project Design Authority delivering robust solutions from spec to manufacture.
• Develop innovative mechanical concepts, calculations, and trade-offs using first principles.
• Conduct FMEA to identify and mitigate risks throughout the lifecycle.
• Lead technical gate reviews, prepare design docs, seek IP protection opportunities.
• Create 3D CAD models, assembly layouts, and manufacturing drawings (NX or SolidWorks).
• Manage Bills of Materials, drawing configurations, and QA standards.
• Collaborate with electrical, assembly and test teams to resolve manufacturing queries.

Due to sustained business growth and team expansion, we are seeking an experienced Senior Design Engineer to join the New Product Development (NPD) team. Acting as a project Design Authority, you will lead the delivery of robust technical solutions, evaluate and mitigate design risk, and drive next-generation high-speed machinery programmes.

Responsibilities, but are not limited to

• Act as a project Design Authority, taking full accountability for the delivery of robust technical engineering solutions from specification through to manufacture
• Develop innovative mechanical concepts, calculations, and trade-off analyses using first-principles engineering for complex high-speed machinery
• Conduct Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) to identify, evaluate, and mitigate technical risks throughout the project lifecycle
• Lead technical gate reviews, prepare design documentation, and identify opportunities for Intellectual Property (IP) protection
• Create 3D CAD models, detailed assembly layouts, and manufacturing drawings using Siemens NX (or SolidWorks)
• Compile and manage Bills of Materials (BOMs), drawing configurations, and incoming inspection quality standards
• Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering, electrical, assembly, and test teams to resolve manufacturing queries and redesign machinery for future-proofing
• Generate comprehensive test plans to verify prototype performance against functional requirements
• Undertake occasional travel to support on-site machinery trials, suppliers, or customer facilities where required

Experiences required

• Proven track record as a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer leading complex New Product Development (NPD) projects
• Strong first-principles mechanical engineering knowledge, with expertise in high-speed rotary equipment, mechanical transmissions, gear design, or precision special-purpose machinery
• Demonstrable proficiency in 3D parametric CAD platforms, ideally Siemens NX, SolidWorks or similar (Solid Edge, Autodesk Inventor, PTC Creo, Onshape, Fusion 360)
• Extensive experience applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and compiling comprehensive Bills of Materials (BOMs)
• Practical experience applying FMEA techniques to evaluate and mitigate engineering risk
• Familiarity with drive systems, sensors, pneumatic, hydraulic, or lubrication systems is highly desirable
