Job Description:
Cranleigh STEM is proud to partner with a high-growth start-up developing breakthrough technology to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels.
The company is now recruiting for a Senior Design Engineer to take ownership of mechanical design and container integration for their systems. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the development of first-of-a-kind systems in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
- Lead the mechanical design of modular hydrogen systems packaged into standard shipping containers, incorporating process units, pipework, valves, and instrumentation.
- Create detailed 3D CAD models and part/assembly drawings using SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
- Design custom components in a variety of materials (stainless steel, glass, ceramics), producing fabrication-ready specifications for suppliers.
- Generate general arrangement drawings and BOMs; integrate supplier models into internal design workflows.
- Conduct mechanical stress calculations to ensure structural integrity and safe operation.
- Work closely with external suppliers and fabrication partners to ensure components meet technical and quality requirements.
- Support prototype build and assembly, including preparation of clear work instructions for mechanical fitting.
- Ensure compliance with UK and international standards, including safety and regulatory requirements.
- A degree in Mechanical or Design Engineering, or relevant professional experience.
- Proven experience in an engineering design role, ideally within complex system environments.
- Proficient in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, AutoCAD or equivalent).
- Strong file management, drawing control, and documentation skills.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, development-stage company environment.
- Experience designing equipment for installation in shipping containers or compact spaces.
- Knowledge of CE/UKCA compliance processes and documentation.
- Experience working with flammable gases or in ATEX/Ex-rated environments.
- Familiarity with solid particle conveyance systems in hazardous conditions.
- Prior involvement in a start-up or early-stage product development setting.
