Job summary

Alfred H Knight is seeking a Senior Data Platform Engineer to join the IT team at the UK Head Office in Prescot, Liverpool. The role focuses on DBA management, platform improvements, and a group-wide rollout of Microsoft Fabric.

You will mentor staff, translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders, and help drive data strategy across the business to support global growth.

Qualifications

• Hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse, Data Factory, Warehousing) to lead and accelerate rollout.
• Advanced experience in T-SQL development, query optimization, and performance tuning within Microsoft SQL Server.
• Proven track record of DBA responsibilities, maintaining database efficiency, and supporting production data environments.
• Deep understanding of designing, building, and maintaining robust data pipelines, ETL/ELT processes, and data warehousing concepts (e.g., star schemas).
• Strong knowledge of data quality principles, validation, governance, and data integrity controls.
• Excellent communication skills—able to break down complex technical topics for non-technical stakeholders.
• Proactive mindset with initiative to drive efficiencies and performance.
• Mentoring and coaching capabilities across apprentices to engineers.

Alfred H Knight has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Data Platform Engineer to join our IT team based at our UK Head Office in Prescot, Liverpool,

Created due to team expansion and recent internal promotion, this is a vital role at the heart of AHK’s global strategy. Without accessible, well-managed, robust, and performant data, we simply cannot expand into new markets or continue delivering service excellence globally.

You will join a warm, collaborative team with plenty going on—from modernising legacy systems and rebuilds to AI integration. As a Senior, you will play a hands-on role in DBA management, driving platform improvements, building capacity, and ensuring our data is live, robust, and high-performing. Crucially, following a successful pilot, you will help accelerate our group-wide rollout of Microsoft Fabric.

Beyond the tech, you will be a key mentor and coach—supporting everyone from our apprentices to our more experienced Data Engineers. To be successful at Alfred H Knight you will need to display the following:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND WORK EXPERIENCE

• Hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse, Data Factory, Warehousing) to lead and accelerate our active rollout.
• Advanced experience in T-SQL development, query optimization, and performance tuning within Microsoft SQL Server.
• Proven track record of DBA responsibilities, maintaining database efficiency, and supporting production data environments.
• Deep understanding of designing, building, and maintaining robust data pipelines, ETL/ELT processes, and data warehousing concepts (e.g., star schemas).
• Strong knowledge of data quality principles, validation, governance, and data integrity controls.
• Excellent communication skills—able to break down complex technical topics and communicate effectively with non-technical business stakeholders.
• Proactive mindset: someone who takes initiative, asks “why,” and constantly seeks to drive efficiencies and performance improvements.
• A passion for mentoring, coaching, and developing talent (from apprentices to experienced engineers).
• Strong analytical, root-cause investigation, and problem-solving skills.

Required Work Experience

• Significant experience in data engineering or data platform management, with a track record of translating business requirements into scalable data solutions.
• Experience supporting modern data platform migrations, lakehouse architectures, or system modernization projects.
• Prior experience developing semantic models and using tools like Power BI is highly desirable

Required Qualifications

• Degree in IT, Science, Maths, or equivalent industry experience.
