As a Senior Data Backend Engineer on the Content and Contributor Intelligence team, you'll build data platforms and services powering innovative GenAI-driven features like review insights, business summaries, and conversational search experiences.

You will collaborate closely with machine learning engineers to design and implement robust, scalable systems processing and serving data at scale—streaming real-time signals, building APIs for ML models, or managing large-scale distributed data stores. Your work will directly enhance the consumer experience on Yelp.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain scalable backend systems and data pipelines supporting ML-powered features across Yelp’s app.
• Collaborate with ML engineers to integrate LLM-based models and content embeddings into production services.
• Manage large-scale distributed systems and databases (e.g., Cassandra, SQL/NoSQL).
• Develop APIs and services powering features like Review Insights, Business Summaries, and Conversational Search.
• Build real-time and batch data processing pipelines using Kafka, Flink, Spark.
• Ensure high availability, performance, and reliability of backend systems.
• Contribute to engineering best practices and mentor junior engineers.

Qualifications

• Strong backend engineering experience, preferably in Python, Java, or C++.
• Proficiency with SQL and NoSQL databases, experience with distributed data stores like Cassandra.
• Experience with real-time data streaming technologies such as Kafka and Flink.
• Familiarity with large-scale data processing frameworks like Spark.
• Understanding of API design, service-oriented architecture, and system reliability.
• Collaborative mindset and ability to work with ML engineers and cross-functional teams.
• Curiosity and initiative to explore new technologies and drive impactful solutions.
