Job summary

News UK is seeking a senior data leader to advance data maturity and maximise value from investments. You will helm a team of data architects and analytics engineers, align business strategy with technical execution, and mentor across distributed teams.

You will design scalable data solutions using BigQuery and GCP, champion data quality and architecture standards, and partner with BI, advertising, and newsroom teams to translate complex requirements into robust engineering plans.

Your team: News UK is embarking on a new chapter of data growth. With the introduction of the company’s AI strategy and the growing need to support brands in achieving data-powered product growth, the News UK Data team is structured to respond effectively. Our teams support the business in broadening data-informed decision-making and experiences, working with Agile teams in London, Sofia, and Bangalore responsible for data collection, ingestion, utilisation, warehousing, and enrichment through machine learning and AI.

Your role:As a senior technical leader, you will play a pivotal role in advancing News UK’s data maturity and maximising value from our data investments. You will bring clarity, consistency, and efficiency across our data organisation while championing robust, scalable solutions. In this role, you will lead a team of talented data architects and analytics engineers while bridging business strategy with technical execution.

Day to day you will:

  • Oversee the design and implementation of data solutions to ensure they are scalable, performant, and cost-effective.

  • Lead the hands-on development and prototyping of data solutions, maintaining involvement in technical execution and mentoring the team through complex implementation challenges.

  • Manage and develop data architects and analytics engineers by setting clear objectives, balancing workloads, and fostering a collaborative culture.

  • Partner with stakeholders across business intelligence, advertising, and newsroom teams to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions.

  • Maintain data architecture principles, standards, and best practices across data modelling, data quality, and work specification.

  • Design data flows, APIs, and data marts tailored for BI tools (Tableau, Looker) and activation platforms like CDPs and DMPs.

  • Collaborate with Data Engineering, Data Governance, and Data Platforms teams to ensure efficient, secure, and aligned solution delivery.

  • Technical proficiency in end-to-end data solution design using BigQuery and GCP products, advanced SQL, stored procedures, and data modelling techniques.

  • Experience managing and nurturing technical professionals to drive alignment, accountability, and professional growth across distributed teams.

  • Proven background bridging business and technology, converting complex requirements into elegant data solutions and clear engineering documentation.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build trusted relationships with cross-functional stakeholders across business intelligence, advertising, and editorial teams.

  • A collaborative mindset focused on streamlining design and delivery processes to eliminate friction and reduce duplication.
