Main purpose of the role

The Senior Contract Manager is responsible for the entire project lifecycle, focusing on client management, building client networks, and ensuring full compliance on sites, including health, safety, and environmental standards. The role requires a strong understanding of managing finances and budgets, promoting innovative project approaches, and managing a team of contract managers and planners to ensure high-quality work and effective issue resolution.

Roles & Responsibilities
  1. Stakeholder management: Building and maintaining client relationships, managing complex client issues and complaints, and ensuring effective communication between contract managers and clients.
  2. Financial Management: Overseeing project finances, producing cost estimates, analyzing financial gaps, and preparing reports and budgets in collaboration with the Commercial Director. Negotiating costs with suppliers and field teams to stay within budgets.
  3. People management: Leading and managing contract managers and planning managers, delegating tasks efficiently, and fostering a collaborative workplace environment.
  4. Talent management: Mentoring team members, supporting their development, setting objectives, and planning succession to enhance team skills.
  5. Project management: Overseeing multiple projects, producing technical reports, and ensuring project delivery aligns with client and division expectations.
  6. Compliance, health and safety: Ensuring site compliance, monitoring health and safety standards, managing hazards, and working with HSQE to promote safety awareness and improvements.
  7. Business development: Collaborating with Business Development to price large contracts, support tendering processes, and manage business growth.
  8. Resourcing: Managing project allocation, utilizing team skills effectively, and sourcing resources and subcontractors as needed.
  9. Asset management: Sourcing equipment, preparing business cases for new equipment needs, and managing project resources.
  10. Decision making: Approving project plans and ensuring projects are managed within financial constraints.
  11. Technologies: Working with IT to improve workflows, automate documents, and enhance data tracking and system usage.
  12. Reporting: Providing regular updates on project progress, finances, compliance, and safety to directors and teams.
  13. Project scope: Managing regional projects exceeding £6m annually.
  14. Continuous improvement: Reviewing and optimizing workflows and processes for efficiency and development.
  15. Support functions management: Ensuring support functions comply with standards and regulations.
  16. Accreditations: Maintaining current accreditations and exploring new revenue opportunities.
What we’re looking for
Essential Knowledge and Skills
  • 5+ years in the rail industry or similar.
  • 5+ years management experience in a relevant industry.
  • Knowledge of arboriculture and/or rail sectors.
  • Experience working with diverse stakeholders.
  • Full UK driving license and willingness to travel.
  • Experience in manual roles within the industry or similar.
  • Hold COSS and SMSTS qualifications (training provided).
  • HSQE qualifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH.
Desirable Knowledge and Skills
  • Additional manual industry experience.
  • Additional qualifications such as COSS, SMSTS, NEBOSH, IOSH.
