Main purpose of the role

The Senior Contract Manager has overall responsibility for the project lifecycle, focusing on client management, building client networks, and ensuring full compliance on sites, including health and safety and environmental requirements. The role requires a strong understanding of managing finances and budgets, promoting innovative project approaches, managing a team of contract managers and planners, and ensuring high-quality work and effective issue resolution.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Stakeholder management: Building and maintaining client relationships, managing complex client issues, and ensuring effective communication between contract managers and clients.
  • Financial Management: Overseeing project finances, producing costings, analyzing gaps, and preparing financial reports and budgets in collaboration with the Commercial Director.
  • People management: Leading and managing a team of Contract Managers and Planning Managers, ensuring fair delegation, efficiency, and adherence to deadlines.
  • Talent management: Mentoring team members, supporting their development, setting objectives, and planning succession.
  • Project management: Overseeing multiple projects, producing technical reports for clients and divisions.
  • Compliance, health and safety: Ensuring site compliance, monitoring health and safety metrics, and working with HSQE to improve site safety and environmental practices.
  • Business development: Collaborating with Business Development to price large contracts and support tendering processes.
  • Resourcing: Managing project allocation, team workload, and sourcing resources, including subcontractors.
  • Asset management: Sourcing equipment and preparing business cases for new equipment needs.
  • Decision making: Sign-off on project works, ensuring management within financial constraints.
  • Technologies: Working with IT to improve systems, automation, and data tracking.
  • Reporting: Providing regular updates on project progress, finances, compliance, and safety.
  • Project scope: Managing regional projects exceeding £6m annually.
  • Continual Process Improvement: Reviewing workflows and systems for efficiency and development.
  • Support functions management: Ensuring support functions meet standards and compliance.
  • Accreditations: Maintaining and seeking new accreditation opportunities.
What we’re looking for
Essential Knowledge and Skills
  • 5+ years in the rail or similar industry.
  • Management experience in a similar field.
  • Industry knowledge of arboriculture and/or rail.
  • Stakeholder management experience.
  • Full UK driving license.
  • Experience in manual roles within the industry.
  • Hold or be willing to undertake COSS and SMSTS qualifications.
  • HSQE Qualifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH.
Desirable Knowledge and Skills
  • Additional manual industry experience.
  • Qualifications as above.
