Job summary

Sir Robert McAlpine in Crewe leads the delivery of the Leighton Hospital project as part of the New Hospital Programme, seeking an experienced Senior Construction Manager/Chief Engineer to guide engineering, construction and leadership efforts on a major £800 million healthcare scheme.

The role reports to the Project Director and focuses on safe, efficient delivery within schedule and budget, coordinating engineers, site teams and subcontractors while maintaining regulatory compliance and high

Qualifications

• Proven experience delivering multimillion-pound healthcare construction projects.
• Strong leadership and people-management skills to coordinate engineering and construction teams.
• Collaborative communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Commitment to health, safety and wellbeing on-site.
• Knowledge of NEC contracts, procurement, and contract administration.
• Experience preparing project reports for management and stakeholders.
• SMSTS qualification.
• Valid CSCS Card.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the full construction engineering process, ensuring designs, methodologies, and procedures comply with regulations and standards.
• Provide visible leadership across site operations, embedding a safety-first culture.
• Monitor and manage the project programme, identifying risks and opportunities and implementing mitigations.
• Ensure delivery within time and budget constraints, supporting cost control and value management.
• Identify, manage, and mitigate technical and construction risks while maintaining project integrity.
• Lead and coordinate engineering teams and subcontractors, providing mentoring and technical guidance.
• Maintain strong relationships with the client and stakeholder teams as a key technical interface.
• Maintain auditable records of engineering decisions and changes.
• Set and manage short- and long-term project objectives aligned with goals.
• Contribute to and review project reports, updating progress, risks, and opportunities.
