Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity to join Sheffield Health and Social Care in the stroke psychology services based in Rotherham. You will be joining well-established, valued services, working with multidisciplinary teams to provide high-quality, evidence-based care to stroke survivors across the pathway.

The role is varied and dynamic, supporting the development of clinical psychologist skills as well as specialist stroke skills and knowledge. The post will cover Rotherham services working as part of a stroke psychology team.

This position offers great opportunities for collaboration with professionals within Rotherham and the wider region, including input into national and regional working groups. As part of the Clinical Health psychology team, you will have access to strong psychology support and leadership both locally and regionally.

Working with other stroke psychologists will provide support, supervision, and leadership opportunities. We support training and development, including postgraduate clinical neuropsychology training and other relevant areas.

Main duties of the job
  1. Provide a clinical psychology service to stroke survivors and their families in various settings (inpatient, community inpatient rehabilitation units, homes, or other community settings), requiring frequent travel.
  2. Collaborate with the stroke multidisciplinary team in delivering a stepped model of care for cognitive and emotional difficulties post-stroke, including consultation, advice, training, and supervision.
  3. Offer supervision to other roles, including Trainee Psychologists, appropriate to banding.
  4. Lead on service development projects, including work towards the new National Stroke Service model.

Clinical
  1. Conduct highly specialist psychological assessments of service users referred to the Rotherham Stroke Service, interpreting complex data from various sources including tests, self-report measures, rating scales, observations, and interviews.
  2. Formulate and implement plans for psychological treatment and management based on evidence-based methods across different care settings.
  3. Work face-to-face with service users in individual, family, or group therapy settings, addressing complex psychological issues post-stroke such as depression, anxiety, PTSD.
  4. Implement specialist psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families, and groups, adjusting formulations based on explanatory models.
  5. Evaluate treatment options considering complex historical and developmental factors.
  6. Exercise autonomous professional responsibility for assessment, treatment, and discharge of service users.
  7. Provide psychological advice, guidance, and consultation to other professionals, contributing to formulation, diagnosis, and treatment plans.
  8. Undertake risk assessments and advise on psychological aspects of risk management.
  9. Communicate sensitive information effectively and monitor progress during care.
Teaching, Training, and Supervision
  1. Receive regular clinical supervision following professional guidelines.
  2. Supervise other MDT staff’s psychological work as appropriate.
  3. Supervise trainee psychologists.
  4. Provide clinical supervision to less experienced psychologists.
  5. Contribute to teaching at pre- and post-qualification levels.
  6. Offer specialised advice, consultation, and training across agencies and settings.
Management, Recruitment, Policy, and Service Development
  1. Contribute to practice development through research, evaluation, and audit.
  2. Support governance by developing outcome measures and audits.
  3. Advise management on psychological and organisational matters.
  4. Manage waiting lists and participate in case allocation considering skill mix and caseload.
  5. Implement and propose policy changes to ensure high standards of service.
Research and Service Evaluation
  1. Use evidence-based literature to support practice.
  2. Supervise research and evaluation projects.
  3. Disseminate research findings through publications and conferences.
Working Environment
  1. Provide care across diverse settings, including inpatient, outpatient, community, and homes.
  2. Work alone in situations with potential verbal or physical aggression.
