Job overviewAn exciting opportunity is available for a motivated surgeon to join our consultant-led Abdominal Wall Unit as a Post-CCT Fellow training (ST8+, post-CCT or equivalent) this fellowship is designed to provide advanced, hands-on training in complex hernia surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction, with significant exposure to both open and laparoscopic techniques.
This is a 12 month post and is ideal for surgeons looking to further refine their expertise and prepare for a consultant career in hernia and general surgery.
Main duties of the jobYou will work closely with a specialist team performing high volumes of:
- Rives-Stoppa repairs (open and laparoscopic)
- Posterior component separation (TAR)
- TAPP and TEP inguinal hernia repairs
- Complex ventral and parastomal hernias, often in collaboration with colorectal and bariatric teams
Over the course of the fellowship, you will be expected to participate in at least 25 TAPPs, 25 TEPs, and 20 complex reconstructions. Our multidisciplinary approach includes prehabilitation, BOTOX, and one of the UK's highest caseloads using Fasciotens to facilitate closure. The role also includes participation in the emergency general surgery rota at St Helierone of the busiest units in South-West Londonoffering consultant-level experience in a high-acuity setting. Additional opportunities in research and audit are available for those with academic interests.

We operate two busy general hospitals, Epsom Hospital and St Helier Hospital, and run services from other locations, including Sutton Hospital. St Helier Hospital is home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children, while Epsom Hospital is home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC).
