Job summary

We are looking to recruit five experienced clinicians who will work autonomously to a level of defined competencies, as agreed within local clinical governance frameworks.

Main duties of the job

Provide a good standard of practice and care.

Keep professional knowledge and skills up to date.

Recognise and work within the limits of your competence.

The appointee will be based at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary but will be required to support the Trust's General Surgery workload wherever it is located. The appointee will work independently but would be supported by consultant surgeon. Appointee shall be provided for support career progression and would be allocated a clinical supervisor

The general workload includes dealing with emergency admissions and their management while on call. Elective work will involve operative and non-operative management of General/upper gastrointestinal & colorectal surgery (gallstone management, abdominal wall hernia surgery, day case surgery, benign & malignant colorectal Surgery).

The appointee's will be responsible for:

  • Providing specialist advice to patients regarding their illness
  • Participate in on-call rota for emergency general surgery
  • Undertake regular ward rounds
  • Attend operating theatre and endoscopy sessions
  • Working with colleagues to provide effective clinical leadership for all staff in the service
  • Contributing to and participating in the development of the service
  • Involve in teaching and training, audit and research

    Communications and Key Working Relationships

    Mr Imran Alam, who is the Clinical Director, leads the department. The General Surgery & Urology Directorate forms part of the Surgical Division, which is led by the Divisional Medical Director Dr Christos Zipitis and Mr Nicholas Jones , Divisional Director for Operations and Performance. All the clinical directorates are under the leadership of the Medical Director, Dr Sanjay Arya, Consultant Cardiologist.

    The Surgical Operational Management team work closely with our team to ensure the smooth running of our services for the benefit of our patients. Our management team consists of

    The General Surgery & Urology Directorate is largely autonomous with its own business plan and has regular meetings with the other specialties within the Surgical Division to co-ordinate services. The directorate also has a seat on the Clinical Advisory Board where representatives of all specialities meet monthly to discuss clinical policies for the whole trust.

    Junior Teaching Fellow (undergraduate teaching x 3 days & clinical commitments x 2 days

    The configuration of the surgical teams maximises middle grade support for both theatre sessions on the RAEI/Leigh site and clinics. A middle grade will be available to support, subject to on call commitments and leave and there is a shared core trainee or FY2 and FY1 support for these posts.

      Responsibility for Health & Safety

      Compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 the post holder is required to fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards, and a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.

      Responsibility for Teaching
      • The appointee will be expected to participate in the teaching of undergraduate staff and in the professional development of junior medical staff working in the Department.
      • The Trust supports the College guidelines on maintaining CME and is committed to providing time and funding for this. Staff Grade Doctors are required to maintain a logbook, have appraisals, educational activity and assessments.
      Work Circumstances & on-call

      There is a resident on call element, including weekends. The current rota is a 1 in 12,

      One session per month at Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust is devoted to audit when all clinical services are suspended.
