Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Paediatric Senior Clinical Fellow on the Paediatric Critical Care Unit, Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham. The successful applicant for this post will work alongside existing paediatric trainees on the Mid-Trent training scheme , with the option of additional experience with the CoMET regional transport team, based at Castle Donnington.

Main duties of the job

The purpose built Paediatric Critical Care Unit has the physical capacity to accommodate 18 children, and is commissioned for 14 beds including both level 2 and 3 patients. There are approximately 5-600 patients admitted per year.

We are a regional specialist unit for Nephrology (EMEESY Network covering the East of England), Major trauma, Burns, Neurosurgery, Oncology, and Spinal surgery, as well as supporting patients with general medical conditions. Surgical care is provided for children with complex neonatal problems, as well as neurosurgery, E.N.T, general and spinal surgery. Patients are equally distributed between medical and surgical specialties. All paediatric specialties, other than hepatology and cardiac surgery, are supported by the PCCU.

The CoMET transport service is shared between Nottingham and Leicester paediatric critical care teams and has been based at the Castle Donnington base since November 2023. We offer advice, stabilisation and transfer for children at 7 regional district general hospitals, travelling by both road and by helicopter transfer when required (in conjunction with The Children's Air Ambulance).

You will contribute to a Critical Care full shift system with out of hours cover dedicated to PICU and with thew option of CoMET experience. The average number of hours worked per week will be a maximum of 48.

About us

The post is suitable for individuals who have at least 2 years of approved SHO posts (or equivalent) within paediatrics or within an allied specialty giving experience in managing unwell children (Anaesthetics/emergency medicine etc). Candidates may wish to gain experience whilst waiting for a training post to become available or may have a CCST within PICU and are awaiting a consultant post. Applicants will preferably possess MRCPCH or equivalent.

Job responsibilities

The successful applicant will get experience in respiratory intensive care, including the use of Electrical Impedance Tomography on critically ill patients on PICU
