Job summary

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is recruiting a Senior Clinical Coder to join a multi-site team across five PODs. The role supports accurate coding, with AI-assisted coding software, ensuring timely revenue capture for patients treated within the Trust.

The successful candidate will have ACC qualification and post-qualification experience across medical and surgical specialties in an acute setting, with a mix of remote and on-site work patterns.

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent level requirement; strong anatomy & physiology knowledge.
  • Experience withHRG grouping and coding terminology; knowledge of HRGs and PbR frameworks.
  • Auditor/Trainer qualifications in Clinical Coding are advantageous.
  • Experience with clinical coding software and hospital IT systems.

Responsibilities

  • Assign clinical codes using ICD-10 and OPCS-4 within set deadlines to ensure accurate reimbursement.
  • Increase coding accuracy and completeness by engaging clinicians and departments.
  • Provide technical coding support to coding teams and liaise with ICT/Finance and divisions.

Job overview

Coders work closely with clinical teams, helping improve processes and efficiency. A rolling audit programme with strong clinical engagement supports a productive partnership between coding and clinical staff.

An opportunity has arisen for a Senior Clinical Coder. Teams work corporately across five rotating clinical PODs, ensuring accurate and timely reporting of Trust activity to support financial flows and strategic management. The department is introducing AI- assisted coding software, placing it at the forefront of innovation in clinical coding.

You must demonstrate strong analytical, logical, and communication skills. Flexibility, teamwork, and the ability to meet deadlines are essential. An ACC qualification is required, with post- qualification experience across medical and surgical specialities in an acute setting.

The team works remotely 3 days a week and on site Tuesdays and Wednesdays. A 10% recruitment and retention premium applies.

Main duties of the job
  • To participate with all team members in meeting strict local, national and contractual deadlines for the assignment of clinical codes using the classifications ICD-10 and OPCS-4, to ensure accurate and timely reimbursement for each patient treated within the trust.
  • To enhance the accuracy and completeness of the clinical coding through improved sources of information, engaging clinicians, and the Divisions and relevant departments in particular where it impacts on high cost and complex specialised areas where additional expertise is required.
  • Provide professional coding technical support to the coding teams and also SLA, Divisions and Information/ICT and Finance in these and other areas.

Education/ Qualifications
  • Academic achievements to a degree level or the equivalent in work experience
  • High degree of knowledge in Anatomy & Physiology
  • Sound knowledge of Payment by Results/HRGs (Healthcare Resource Groups)
  • Auditor/Trainer qualifications in Clinical Coding
Experience
  • Experience in a wide range of specialties & their complexities
  • Be able to meet the prerequisites of sitting either audit workshop or Train the Trainer Courses
  • Experience in Clinical coding terminologies and software encoding experience
  • Hospital information systems & IT packages
  • Proven experience in dealing with staff at all levels
