Murphy is recruiting for a Senior Civil Structural Engineer (Power) to work with Murphy Applied Engineering on our Energy team, based out of our Stone Cross - Warrington office.
The Senior Civil Structural Engineer will be responsible for the delivery of high-quality, safe, and efficient civil engineering designs for substation and linear HV transmission projects. This role involves managing consultants and developing internal design capabilities.
Following the ‘OneMurphy’ approach, we deliver all aspects of the projects we work on. Murphy has designed, constructed, and commissioned projects for clients such as National Grid, SSE, and Ørsted, within the transmission and distribution networks of the Energy sector.
A day in the life of a Murphy Senior Civil Structural Engineer
- Undertaking technical delivery of civil designs, including producing and checking calculations and drawings against project scope, Client Technical standards, British and European standards, and industry best practices.
- Developing civil design scopes, WBS, and deliverables lists.
- Structural building and HV plant support structure analysis, design, and review of REVIT models and output drawings.
- Foundation analysis and design.
- Inspection and surveying existing civil infrastructure for potential re-use.
- Drainage system modeling (desirable but not essential).
- Conducting site visits and inspections.
- Undertaking Design Risk Assessments and contributing to project HAZARD reviews.
- Coordinating with design management functions and interfacing with other disciplines.
- Engaging with Clients, Subcontractors, and Third Parties to support project delivery, with support from the Principal Engineer or Engineering Manager.
- Managing, producing, and responding to Technical Queries or RFIs for live projects in accordance with the Design Management procedure.
- Programme and resource management of civil design activities.
- Reviewing external civil designs for compliance, SHESQ, constructability, and value.
- Developing and mentoring junior engineers, graduates, and apprentices.
Is this role a fit for you?
- HND, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering.
- Civil design experience, preferably within consultancy or internal contractor design.
- Exposure to site construction activities through previous roles, placements, or visits.
- Experience working to National Grid, SSE, or DNO standards, including HV civils design.
- Experience in work winning, including risk identification and mitigation.
- Chartered or working towards chartered status with ICE and/or IStructE.
