Job summary

Balfour Beatty is seeking an experienced Senior Design Engineer - Civils for a 12-month contract based in Prescot, Merseyside. The role is 37.5 hours per week, primarily office-based with hybrid working possibilities after initial training.

The candidate will lead complex structural renewal and maintenance designs and manage associated site investigations. Key requirements include a Civil/Structural Engineering degree, Incorporated Engineer status with the Engineering Council, CAD and STAAD.Pro

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (HNC accepted with 5+ years railway structure design experience).
• Registered with the Engineering Council as an Incorporated Engineer (or working towards ICE membership).
• Knowledge of Group Standards/Health & Safety legislation and CDM regulations.
• Experience with CAD drawings and structural analysis software (STAAD.Pro or similar).
• Experience delivering engineering solutions in design-and-build environments and leading medium-sized teams.

Responsibilities

• Design complex structural renewal and maintenance projects from inception to design completion.
• Conduct structures assessments and manage site investigations/surveys.
• Prepare and review technical reports, draft specifications, calculations, and drawings.
• Provide reports on the condition and capacity of existing structures and supervise implementation of works.
• Coordinate resources and check outputs to ensure quality and compliance.

Are you an experienced Civil or Structural Design Engineer?

Do you have experience working complex structural renewal projects?

Are you based in or around Merseyside?

Balfour Beatty could be looking for you! One of the largest Construction contractors in the UK, the successful applicant will be an individual who holds 5+ years of complex structural renewal and maintenance experience and is capable of delivering engineering solutions within a design and build environment.

Role: Senior Design Engineer - Civils

Location: Balfour Beatty Pensions Centre, Kings Business Park, Kings Drive, Prescot, Merseyside, L34 1PJ (100% office based but hybrid working can be negotiated after initial training)

Salary: £55ph

Contract length: 12 months initially with the potential to be extended

Shift Patterns: Mon-Fri, 37.5 hours per week (standard office hours)

Responsibilities

• Undertaking the design of complex structural renewal and maintenance projects from inception to design completion
• Conducting structures assessments
• Managing the delivery of site investigations / surveying and planning
• Preparing and reviewing technical reports and draft specifications for remedial and improvement works
• Preparing calculations, drawings, technical specifications, and technical reports
• Providing technical reports on the condition / capacity of existing structures
• Carrying out detailed design and preparing supporting documentation
• Undertaking structure inspection, assessment and preparation of reports
• Identifying technical resources required to deliver aspects of a Project
• Supervising implementation of work and undertaking appropriate checking of the work as required
• A full JD can be provided with additional accountabilities

Essential requirements

• Degree educated within Civil or Structural Engineering discipline (HNC will be accepted with the addition of 5+ years railway structure design experience)
• Registered with the Engineering Council as an Incorporated Engineer
• Working towards membership of the I.C.E
• Good working knowledge of Group Standards / Health and Safety legislation and CDM regulations
• Knowledge of engineering drawing practices
• competent in CAD and familiar with Structure Analysis package (STAADpro or similar)
• Experienced in the detailed facets of engineering for particular discipline.
• Previous experience delivering solutions to engineering problems in the design and build environment
• experience in leading medium sized teams

Desirable requirements

• Experience in railway based civil engineering and structures
• Undertaking PTS, IWA, COSS, confined spaces, aerial platform, OHLE training (as required)
• Experience in the asset management of railway civil engineering structures
