Job summary

SSEN Transmission is seeking a Senior Cable Engineer to join our Offshore Project Engineering team to drive HVDC/HVAC cable projects for the Pathway to 2030. Based from our Scottish locations (Glasgow, Perth, Inverness or Aberdeen), you will ensure technical excellence and safe, compliant installation and commissioning.

You will support FEED activities, define system requirements, review contractor designs, mentor junior engineers and uphold CDM regulations and industry standards to help deliver

Qualifications

• BEng/BSc in an engineering discipline.
• Proven HVDC or HVAC cable project delivery experience.
• Experience with ECC contracts and CDM regulations, especially as Supervisor/Principal Designer.
• Strong knowledge of industry standards and best practices.
• Excellent communication, time management, and mentoring abilities.

Responsibilities

• Support FEED activities: route, landfall, and risk assessment with multiple teams.
• Drive safety-in-design, manage geotechnical risks, and mitigate safety/quality issues.
• Define system requirements for ECCs and assist tender reviews.
• Review contractor designs for compliance and oversee installation and commissioning.
• Mentor junior engineers and support trainees.

Salary

£58,100 - £87,100 + car /car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

The role

As part of SSEN Transmission Pathway to 2030 programme of works, we are looking for a Senior Cable Engineer to join our Offshore Project Engineering team to help drive forward our projects and who can bring big ideas, new skills and innovative thinking to help us grow our teams to successfully deliver a network for Net Zero. Our Pathway to 2030 projects incorporate HVDC and HVAC cable systems in both marine and terrestrial environments. The Senior Cable Engineer is a key person in driving technical excellence, quality of installation, best practice, and resolution to design risks/ technical issues. You'll play a key part in delivering Net Zero.

You will

• Support FEED activities including options assessment, cable route and landfall development, and risk assessment, working collaboratively with environmental, consenting, geotechnical, civil, and offshore installation teams.
• Drive safety-in-design as part of Designer and Principal Designer duties, managing geotechnical risks and reducing technical, quality, health, and safety risks through identification, assessment, mitigation, communication, and record keeping.
• Define cable system requirements for ECCs and contribute to tender reviews as a core member of the technical team.
• Review and approve Contractor designs and deliverables for compliance with Employer’s requirements and legislation, while overseeing installation and commissioning works.
• Mentor junior engineers, providing guidance and support throughout their traineeships.

You have

• A BEng/BSc (or higher) in a relevant engineering discipline.
• Proven technical expertise from key roles in HVDC or HVAC transmission cable project development and delivery.
• Demonstrable experience with ECC contracts and CDM regulations, particularly as Supervisor and Principal Designer.
• Strong knowledge of industry standards, specifications, and best-practice recommendations.
• Effective Communication, manage time and priorities well, and mentor junior engineers to build technical excellence across the team and business.
