SP Energy Networks in Prenton is seeking a Senior Cable Design Engineer to develop and deliver HV cable engineering solutions from feasibility to detailed design across 33kV-132kV networks in North Wales and North West England.

You'll lead technical work, mentor junior staff, liaise with global teams, ensure safety and regulatory compliance, and contribute to Net Zero goals while benefiting from a hybrid working pattern and a strong benefits package.

Qualifications

• Degree in an Engineering discipline or equivalent practical experience in high-voltage cable engineering.
• Significant proven experience in an accountable position working with high-voltage power cables and equipment.
• Proficiency in Cymcap software for cable design and evaluation.
• Experience preparing Project Quality Plans (PQPs) and ensuring deliverables meet required standards.

Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver cable engineering solutions from feasibility through detailed design for high-value projects.
• Prepare specifications and designs, assess submissions, and ensure compliance with legislation and policies.
• Drive resolution of land and consent matters for underground cable routes and plan outage programmes.
• Review drawings and specifications for construction and procurement, maintaining documentation control.
• Provide specialist input to resolve site/cable issues and promote best practices and safety.

This position offers the opportunity to shape the development of high-voltage cable systems across our 33kV to 132kV networks, delivering engineering solutions that keep electricity flowing to homes and businesses across North Wales and North West England. Working closely with the Lead Design Engineer – Circuits, you'll take ownership of high-value, complex projects while providing technical expertise and guidance that drives innovation and excellence. This is more than engineering — it's about building the infrastructure that enables our Net Zero goals and ensures reliable, sustainable energy for communities we serve.***What you'll be doing**** Develop and deliver cable engineering solutions from initial feasibility through to detailed design, managing the technical aspects of cable systems and associated equipment for projects of significant value and complexity* Prepare comprehensive engineering specifications and designs, assess submissions, and ensure all work complies with current legislation, policies, and operational requirements* Drive the resolution of statutory, land, and consent matters for underground cable routes, while recommending construction and outage programmes* Prepare and review cable drawings and technical specifications for construction and procurement, maintaining control of all documentation issued to Project Delivery and Pre-Contract Teams* Provide specialist input to resolve site and construction cable issues, investigate common faults to prevent recurrence, and conduct assessments for cable works and suppliers* Promote industry best practice and technological advances, evaluating new ideas, equipment, and materials that deliver cost savings, improved efficiency, and enhanced safety* Liaise with global multi-disciplinary engineering teams to deliver integrated solutions* Supervise and mentor less experienced staff within the department or project team* Contribute to training needs assessments and help develop technical, operational, and safety packages for new products and innovations***What you'll bring**** Degree in an Engineering discipline or equivalent practical experience in high-voltage cable engineering* Significant proven experience in an accountable position working with high-voltage power cables and associated equipment* Proficiency in using Cymcap software for cable design and evaluation* Ability to implement, apply, and promote CDM and Health & Safety best practice within a design environment* Capability to represent departments or project teams on cable engineering matters, making informed judgments and advocating for industry standards and best practice* Experience in assessing engineering documentation for feasibility and compliance with client requirements, preparing accurate project budgets, and delivering quality documentation* Experience preparing Project Quality Plans (PQPs) and ensuring all deliverables are met to the required standard* Effective communication and coordination skills, enabling you to work across multi-disciplinary teams and provide clear technical guidance to stakeholders at all levels* Proactive approach to problem-solving, with the ability to investigate complex technical issues and develop practical, innovative solutions***What's in it for you*** As well as an attractive salary which is reviewed annually, you can also enjoy a number of other benefits.
