Job summary

ScottishPower is seeking a Senior Cable Design Engineer based in Prenton with hybrid working. You will steer high-voltage cable projects (33kV–132kV), delivering feasibility through detailed design and ensuring compliance with HSE and CDM standards.

Strong embedding of budgets, PQPs and cross-functional collaboration is expected to enable Net Zero goals. You will mentor junior staff, liaise with global teams, and drive technical excellence while promoting safety and industry best practices

Qualifications

• Degree in an Engineering discipline or equivalent practical HV cable engineering experience.
• Significant proven experience with HV power cables and associated equipment.
• Proficiency with Cymcap software for cable design and evaluation.

Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver cable engineering solutions from feasibility to detailed design for high-value projects.
• Prepare engineering specifications and designs; assess submissions for compliance with legislation and requirements.
• Resolve statutory, land and consent issues for underground cable routes and plan outage programmes.

This position offers the opportunity to shape the development of high-voltage cable systems across our 33kV to 132kV networks, delivering engineering solutions that keep electricity flowing to homes and businesses across North Wales and North West England.Working closely with the Lead Design Engineer – Circuits, you'll take ownership of high-value, complex projects while providing technical expertise and guidance that drives innovation and excellence. This is more than engineering — it's about building the infrastructure that enables our Net Zero goals and ensures reliable, sustainable energy for communities we serve.What you'll be doingDevelop and deliver cable engineering solutions from initial feasibility through to detailed design, managing the technical aspects of cable systems and associated equipment for projects of significant value and complexityPrepare comprehensive engineering specifications and designs, assess submissions, and ensure all work complies with current legislation, policies, and operational requirementsDrive the resolution of statutory, land, and consent matters for underground cable routes, while recommending construction and outage programmesPrepare and review cable drawings and technical specifications for construction and procurement, maintaining control of all documentation issued to Project Delivery and Pre-Contract TeamsProvide specialist input to resolve site and construction cable issues, investigate common faults to prevent recurrence, and conduct assessments for cable works and suppliersPromote industry best practice and technological advances, evaluating new ideas, equipment, and materials that deliver cost savings, improved efficiency, and enhanced safetyLiaise with global multi-disciplinary engineering teams to deliver integrated solutionsSupervise and mentor less experienced staff within the department or project teamContribute to training needs assessments and help develop technical, operational, and safety packages for new products and innovationsWhat you'll bringDegree in an Engineering discipline or equivalent practical experience in high-voltage cable engineeringSignificant proven experience in an accountable position working with high-voltage power cables and associated equipmentProficiency in using Cymcap software for cable design and evaluationAbility to implement, apply, and promote CDM and Health & Safety best practice within a design environmentCapability to represent departments or project teams on cable engineering matters, making informed judgments and advocating for industry standards and best practiceExperience in assessing engineering documentation for feasibility and compliance with client requirements, preparing accurate project budgets, and delivering quality documentationExperience preparing Project Quality Plans (PQPs) and ensuring all deliverables are met to the required standardEffective communication and coordination skills, enabling you to work across multi-disciplinary teams and provide clear technical guidance to stakeholders at all levelsProactive approach to problem-solving, with the ability to investigate complex technical issues and develop practical, innovative solutionsWhat's in it for youAs well as an attractive salary which is reviewed annually, you can also enjoy a number of other benefits.
