Job summary

Headland Archaeology is seeking an experienced Principal Archaeology & Built Heritage Consultant to lead Historic Building Recording and related built heritage projects in the UK. You will shape technical direction, manage complex programmes and engage closely with clients, officers and academics.

The role requires leadership of a growing consultancy area, mentoring junior staff, and developing new standards and guidance within Headland and the broader RSK group.

Qualifications

• Significant professional experience in historic building recording and buildings archaeology.
• Experience leading and designing historic building recording or related projects.
• Strong knowledge of UK architectural history.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience mentoring and leading teams and projects.
• Full, valid driving licence and willingness to travel for sites and archives.

Responsibilities

• Lead historic Building Recording and buildings archaeology projects from scoping to publication.
• Interpret historic buildings through fabric, documentary and archival research.
• Design and review briefs, work plans and budgets for projects.
• Produce high-quality Historic Building Recording reports and outputs.
• Provide specialist advice to heritage projects and stakeholders.
• Mentor and develop junior colleagues and project teams.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams and manage client relationships.
