Job summary

Amey is recruiting a Principal Building Structures Engineer - Nuclear to lead the Built Environment portfolio within Consulting. You will oversee delivery of structurally sound designs, calculations and drawings, managing quality, cost and schedule across projects.

The role may involve site work, and supervision of junior engineers in a fast-paced environment. We value Chartered professionals with expertise in Eurocodes, Building Regulations and strong client engagement to support our nuclear

Qualifications

  • Demonstrable building structures experience.
  • Experience leading a small team of engineers/technicians.
  • Familiar with Structural Eurocodes and Building Regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team to produce technically sound designs, calculations and drawings.
  • Check designs and documentation to meet quality, cost and programme targets.
  • Manage project budgets and costs for deliverables.
  • Liaise with clients and suppliers and attend progress meetings.
  • Contribute to bids and work-winning activities.
  • Work on-site on a visiting or full-time basis, including out-of-hours.
  • Act as people manager when required.

Title: Principal Building Structures Engineer - Nuclear

The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Principal Building Structures Engineer to join our Advisory team within Consulting - a vibrant, inclusive community that celebrates our differences and makes a real impact across the UK.

With shared office space in Birmingham, Telford, Manchester, Stafford, Sheffield and Bristol, we welcome applications from Senior Engineers across these regions.

The role

As the Lead Senior Building Structures Engineer you will function as a team leader, providing and overseeing the production of technically sound deliverables for projects within the Built Environment portfolio. The portfolio may be single or multidiscipline projects.

Key Responsibilities Include
  • To lead a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks
  • The preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme. Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions
  • Responsibility for the commercial success of the projects within their portfolio, controlling budgets and managing the costs associated with the production of deliverables
  • Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, responding to queries etc.
  • Significantly contributing to the preparation of bids and the general work winning function
  • Working on site, either on a visiting basis or in a full time but temporary role and including out of hours working
  • Assuming the role of people manager when required by the business
Nuclear Sector Experience

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates with experience of delivering projects within the nuclear sector or other highly regulated environments. Experience working on nuclear licensed sites, knowledge of nuclear safety culture, and familiarity with relevant regulatory and assurance frameworks will be highly valued. Applicants holding, or working towards, NSQEP (Nuclear Skills Qualification and Experience Passport) recognition are encouraged to apply. Whether your background is in project management, architecture, structural engineering, building services, surveying or multidisciplinary design, we are looking for professionals who can bring a strong understanding of safety, compliance, quality assurance and technical excellence to support the continued growth of our nuclear and complex infrastructure portfolio which will include; decommissioning and waste management, defence nuclear programmes, SMRs and working with advanced reactors and new nuclear build.

What You Will Bring To Us
  • Have demonstrable building structures experience
  • Experience of managing a small team, engineers and technicians, providing technically robust engineering outputs (designs, calculations, drawings, documentation).
  • Provision of technical leadership and guidance, ensuring compliance with standards and design governance including familiarity with Structural Eurocodes and Building Regulations
  • Experience of using 3D CAD software, Tekla Structural Designer and Tekla Tedds.
  • Experience of managing quality and programme performance across multiple schemes.
  • Professional engagement with clients and stakeholders, to support project delivery where appropriate.
  • Hold Chartered status with a relevant professional institution.
