Urenco is seeking a Senior Building Services & HVAC Engineer for a 12-month assignment at Capenhurst, Chester. You will lead the design, specification, and delivery of building services and HVAC systems across the project lifecycle, ensuring compliance with nuclear safety requirements.

The role includes technical leadership, safety case support, asset management, and liaison with regulators and internal teams to ensure ALARP and regulatory licensing compliance.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering.
  • Strong HVAC and building services knowledge.
  • Nuclear baseline personnel security clearance or ability to obtain clearance.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) with IMechE, CIBSE, or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience in highly regulated industries such as nuclear, defence, pharma, chemical, rail or energy.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and development of HVAC and building services for nuclear facilities.
  • Produce engineering calculations, design specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Ensure designs comply with nuclear standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership across the project lifecycle from concept to handover.

Senior Building Services & HVAC Engineer

Duration: 12 Months

Location: Capenhurst, Chester CH1

Reports to:Site Services Senior Mechanical Engineer (Line) / Site Services Engineering Manager

Rate: £60-£70 per hour

IR35: Inside pay via Umbrella

Role Purpose
The Senior Building Services & HVAC Engineer is responsible for the design,
specification, assessment, and delivery of building services and HVAC systems
supporting Urenco’s facilities.
The role will ensure that systems are designed, installed, commissioned, operated, and
maintained in accordance with nuclear safety requirements, regulatory expectations,
company standards, and industry best practice.
The postholder will provide technical leadership across the project lifecycle, including
concept development, detailed design, safety case support, asset management, system
upgrades, and operational support while ensuring compliance with nuclear licensing and
regulatory requirements.

Technical Leadership
  • Lead the design and development of HVAC and building services systems for
  • nuclear facilities.
  • Provide technical authority and specialist engineering support for ventilation,
  • heating, cooling, air conditioning, pressurisation, filtration, and containment
  • systems.
  • Produce and / or approve engineering calculations, design substantiation,
  • specifications, reports, and technical documentation.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable legislation, nuclear standards, and
  • company engineering procedures.
  • Undertake design reviews and provide independent verification of engineering
  • deliverables.
Nuclear Safety & Compliance
  • Support the development of nuclear safety cases and engineering substantiation.
  • Ensure designs satisfy safety functional requirements and ALARP principles.
  • Assess impacts of design changes on nuclear safety, plant operations, and
  • regulatory compliance.
  • Interface with internal nuclear safety teams and external regulators where
  • required.
  • Maintain compliance with Urenco’s Site Licence Conditions and applicable
  • nuclear industry standards.
Project Delivery
  • Provide engineering leadership in their specialism throughout project delivery
  • phases from concept to commissioning and handover.
  • Develop engineering work packages, scopes of work, and technical requirements.
  • Manage engineering risks, assumptions, interfaces, and be the point contact fto
  • resolve technical queries.
  • Support procurement activities including technical bid evaluations and vendor
  • assessments.
  • Review contractor and supplier designs to ensure compliance with project
  • requirements.
Operations & Asset Management
  • Support operational facilities through troubleshooting and technical
  • investigations.
  • Lead condition assessments and lifecycle reviews of HVAC and building services
  • assets.
  • Develop maintenance strategies and equipment replacement plans.
  • Support plant modifications, upgrades, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
  • Liaise with multidisciplinary engineering teams including mechanical, electrical,
  • civil, process, and safety case engineers.
  • Engage with project managers, operations personnel, maintenance teams, and
  • external suppliers.

Qualifications
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or related
  • discipline.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC and building services engineering principles.
  • Nuclear baseline personnel security clearance or the ability to obtain security
  • clearance.
  • Desirable
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) with IMechE, CIBSE, or equivalent.
  • Nuclear industry experience.
  • Experience within highly regulated industries such as nuclear, defence,
  • pharmaceutical, chemical, rail, or energy sectors.
  • NEBOSH or equivalent safety qualification.
Experience
  • Significant experience in HVAC and building services design and engineering.
  • Experience producing engineering calculations, design specifications, and
  • technical reports.
  • Experience supporting complex engineering projects through the full project
  • lifecycle.
  • Knowledge of relevant building services regulations and standards.
  • Proven ability to manage technical interfaces and multidisciplinary teams.

  • Experience supporting nuclear facilities, laboratories, or safety-critical
  • environments.
  • Experience of safety case substantiation and regulatory compliance activities.
  • Familiarity with ONR expectations and nuclear licence conditions.
  • Experience in plant modifications and asset management programmes.
