Job summary
EnviroTech Talent in Birmingham is seeking a Senior Engineer to lead design delivery of heat pump and mechanical systems, provide technical governance, and mentor the design team. - 10–15 years of professional experience in mechanical building services, geothermal or low-carbon energy design.
- Proficient in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office; strong technical writing skills.
Responsibilities
- Lead delivery of heat pump and HVAC system designs across feasibility to detailed design.
- Act as lead technical interface with clients and manage RFIs and technical clarifications.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary design inputs and ensure design intent is maintained.
- Mentor and develop junior engineers; review calculations and drawings.

We are seeking a Senior Engineer to strengthen our core design capability and take a leading role in project delivery, technical governance, client engagement, mentoring, and team leadership.
This role combines senior heat pump engineering, mechanical systems design, and day-to-day technical project leadership. You will act as a lead design engineer and technical authority, owning engineering outputs, coordinating multidisciplinary inputs, and managing client interfaces.
Senior Engineers remain actively involved in detailed design while taking responsibility for quality, coordination, and programme delivery. Depending on experience, the role may be appointed at Senior or Principal Engineer level, with additional commercial and technical governance responsibilities at Principal level.
- Lead delivery of heat pump and HVAC system designs across
- Feasibility and concept design
- Scheme design, FEED, and detailed design
- Delivery, commissioning, and operational support
- Produce and review:
- Feasibility studies, technical reports, and specifications
- Concept designs, layouts, and system options
- Detailed design documentation and calculations
- Develop and review designs for:
- Plantroom layouts (2D and 3D)
- System schematic drawings
- Size and select:
- Main HVAC plant and equipment
- Ancillary pipework equipment
- Develop and review:
- Mechanical specifications and schedules
- Carry out and review:
- Heat loss and heat gain calculations
- Energy performance and operational data analysis
- Create, maintain, and review engineering calculation spreadsheets
- Act as the lead technical interface with clients
- Build and maintain strong client relationships
- Lead day-to-day project delivery across internal and external project teams
- Review and understand:
- Client specifications
- Employer requirements and work instructions
- Identify potential non-compliances and develop mitigation strategies
- Manage Requests for Information (RFIs) and technical clarifications
- Review, approve, and issue meeting minutes and technical notes
- Support project management through:
- Scope definition
- Programme management
- Internal budget control
- Support variation management where project scope changes occur
- Lead project handover activities
- Lead mechanical design coordination with:
- Architects
- Electrical, structural, and controls designers
- Support detailed-stage coordination while maintaining design intent
- Review and approve developed and detailed designs
- Ensure all designs are:
- Technically robust
- Coordinated across disciplines
- Compliant with relevant standards and guidance
- Participate in external design reviews and technical validation exercises
- Attend and contribute to:
- Site surveys
- Design development meetings
- Carry out or support:
- Installation inspections
- Snagging activities
- System troubleshooting and remedial strategy development
- Support:
- Remote monitoring
- Seasonal commissioning
- Review of as-built documentation
- Mentor and support Intermediate and Junior Engineers
- Review calculations, drawings, and reports produced by junior team members
- Provide structured technical feedback and guidance
- Contribute to the development of:
- Design standards
- Calculation tools
- Engineering workflows and best practices
- BEng / MEng / MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline
- 10-15 years' professional experience in mechanical building services, geothermal systems, or low-carbon energy system design
- Strong technical capability in:
- Mechanical building services design
- HVAC systems
- Low-carbon heating and cooling systems
- Knowledge of geothermal and ground source heat pump systems would be advantageous
- Proficient in:
- Building heat loss and heat gain calculations
- HVAC system design and equipment sizing
- Systems hydraulics and thermodynamics
- Strong working knowledge of industry standards and guidance
- Proficient in:
- AutoCAD
- Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong technical writing and client presentation skills
- Comfortable working within a small consultancy environment with a high degree of responsibility
- Right to work in the UK
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards chartership
- Consultancy or client-facing experience
