About the team we are recruiting to

We value diverse perspectives and experiences and are striving to create a workplace culture that is inclusive, accepting of all, and free from discrimination and bias.

We are looking to recruit a Senior Building Control Officer to join our team. We seek a positive, experienced, enthusiastic, talented, and driven professional who cares about the development of our great city to join our busy, high-performing, forward-thinking team.

Our team handles a wide range of building control projects, from domestic extensions and conversions to large-scale commercial and public developments. We pride ourselves on providing high-quality, customer-focused, and cost-effective services that ensure building safety and quality. We also collaborate with other departments and agencies to promote sustainable development, energy efficiency, accessibility, and fire safety.

What is the job role?

This is a career progression graded role, with progression depending on your experience and accreditation status with the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) and Registered Building Control (RBI).

As a Senior/Building Control Officer, you will contribute to delivering our Building Control service through site inspections, liaising with clients, and assessing developments against Building Regulations, legislation, guidance, and policies.

You will process and assess Building Control applications, ensuring compliance and documenting decisions promptly, depending on your BSR accreditation status.

You will play a key role in public safety by responding to notifications of dangerous structures and ensuring necessary actions are taken.

You will have opportunities to develop and improve the Building Control service, adopting best practices and innovative solutions.

You will serve as a technical advisor on Building Control matters, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and standards.

Although advertised as full-time, we are flexible and consider part-time or flexible working arrangements.

Who are we looking for?

To succeed, you will need:

  • An ONC, OND, or BTEC in a building-related subject; or
  • A professional qualification from a Chartered Institution (RIBA, IStruct E, CIOB) with a Building Control specialization; or
  • CIOB Public Service Building Control Surveying Diploma, Level 4 or 5; or
  • Full membership of RICS or ABEng, or working towards it; or
  • At least three years' experience in a Building Regulations environment.
  • Validation as a Building Safety Regulator Class 2 (A) Domestic Registered Building Inspector.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work under pressure and prioritize.
  • A valid driving license and access to a vehicle, as travel across the city is required.

To progress to Grade 9 (£49,764 - £55,623), you must meet all criteria and hold accreditation as a Building Safety Regulator (BSR) Class 2 (B-F) General Registered Building Inspector.

For an informal discussion, contact Kate Rich, Building Control Manager, at 02476 978538 or Kate.Rich@coventry.gov.uk.
