An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior BMS to join the Cytology team in the Cellular Pathology department.

The post holder will participate in non-gynaecological cytology services, including primary screening of slides and reporting of negative exfoliative cytology samples. The post holder will also provide attendance at Rapid Onsite Examination/Evaluation (ROSE) procedures to assist with sample preparation, including preliminary indication of the presence or absence of diagnostic material or adequacy. Additionally, the role includes providing advanced technical support, supervision, training, and management of the technical service in line with Trust and national standards, mentoring staff, and supporting the completion of post-registration qualifications.

The Pathology departments at North Tees and Hartlepool (NTH) and South Tees Hospitals (STH) are collaborating to develop a joint service called Tees Valley Pathology, delivering services across all hospital sites.

The successful candidate will be based at University Hospital North Tees but will be required to work across our hospital sites to support the development of this collaborative service.

Applications will be considered from those working towards the necessary qualifications. Please note, if successful, you would initially be employed as a Specialist BMS (Band 6) until you complete the necessary qualification.

This is a senior-level laboratory post involving provision of advanced technical support, supervision, training, and management to ensure a high-quality cytology service that meets Trust and national standards.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of methods used within Cytology and stay informed of scientific and technological advances.
  2. Support and develop a fit-for-purpose Cytology service.
  3. Participate in non-gynaecological cytology services, including primary screening and reporting of samples such as urine, serous fluid, and respiratory samples, with double reporting where required.
  4. Attend ROSE clinics to assist with sample preparation and guide intra-procedural decision-making to improve diagnostic yield and reduce repeat procedures.
  5. Maintain personal workload figures and audit reported cases periodically, initiating reviews as necessary.
  6. Participate in external quality assessment schemes.
  7. Perform and present departmental clinical audits annually.
  8. Ensure conformity with quality control standards, maintaining personal and laboratory benchmarks.
