Job description

Joining Arup

Arup's purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for 80 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

You will join a multidisciplinary Energy, Water and Resources team delivering BIM and CAD services across major UK infrastructure programmes, including EA and NRW frameworks and the AMP8 wastewater investment programme.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a motivated and technically proficient BIM Designer to join our multidisciplinary team delivering impactful water and energy projects, in one of our offices in Cardiff, Bristol or Birmingham. The ideal candidate will lead and deliver high-quality BIM modelling and coordination for water infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards and client requirements. This role involves close collaboration across disciplines to support the design and delivery of sustainable water solutions, with a strong emphasis on leading multi-disciplinary coordination.

With frameworks and major projects across the UK in both water and energy, our pipeline of work is strong. We offer flexibility to support your development whether you’re looking to deepen your technical expertise or grow into leadership.

Initially, you will develop and manage detailed 3D BIM models for water infrastructure projects (e.g., pipelines, pumping stations, treatment works) and lead multi-disciplinary coordination, ensuring seamless integration of civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical design elements.

You will facilitate regular coordination reviews and model federation to identify and resolve clashes and design conflicts, produce accurate 2D drawings, sections and schedules from BIM models and maintain model integrity, version control, and compliance with BIM Execution Plans (BEPs).

The role will allow you to liaise with clients, contractors and supply chain partners to ensure BIM deliverables meet expectations, mentor junior BIM technicians and contribute to continuous improvement of BIM processes whilst ensuring adherence to UK BIM standards (e.g., ISO 19650), Arup standards and water industry specifications.

At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective, in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas.

You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

We Are Seeking The Below Skills And Knowledge
  • Proven experience in BIM modelling within the water or utilities sector.
  • Strong Civil 3D capability and experience delivering civil infrastructure models and drawings.
  • Familiarity with Plant 3D Smart P&ID and Revit is desirable.
  • Strong understanding of water infrastructure components, including chambers and access structures, pipework and networks, valves and flow-control equipment, cable and electrical infrastructure, drainage and SuDS, water/wastewater treatment process units, and pumping infrastructure.
  • Experience with point cloud data and reality capture integration.
  • Knowledge of BIM collaboration platforms such as ACC/Autodesk Forma and ProjectWise.
  • Strong knowledge of ISO 19650-aligned information management processes and digital delivery best practice.
  • Good understanding of BIM Execution Plans, model coordination, quality assurance, and project information requirements.
  • Experience planning, reviewing, and coordinating BIM deliverables, including selecting and managing appropriate BIM workflows.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with experience working alongside multidisciplinary teams, clients, and external partners.
  • Ability to guide, mentor, and support less experienced team members.

We recognise that strong candidates may not have every skill required from day one.
