Job summary

STRABAG UK is recruiting a Senior Bid Writer to lead writing for complex bids across major civil engineering and infrastructure projects in the UK. The role focuses on strategy, narrative development, and high-quality submissions in collaboration with Pre-Construction and SMEs.

You will own answer planning, storyboarding, and the integration of win themes, ensuring consistency and persuasiveness in critical submissions while mentoring junior team members.

STRABAG UK is seeking an experienced Senior Bid Writer to join our growing Infrastructure subdivision to play a key role in developing and delivering high-quality tenders and proposals for major civil engineering and infrastructure projects across the UK.

• Established, advanced bid writing experience, authoring and shaping content for complex, high-value tenders within construction, engineering, or infrastructure.
• Proven history of leading detailed question analysis, storyboarding, and response structuring for strategically important opportunities.
• Demonstrable experience translating technical, complex engineering data, methodologies, and logistics into clear, compliant, high-scoring text.
• Strong stakeholder engagement, collaboration, and constructive influencing skills - capable of challenging technical teams and advising Bid Managers.
• Strong track record of independent milestone management, consistently delivering high-quality draft sections to tight internal review gates.
• Demonstrated experience coaching, mentoring, or upskilling mid-level writers and operational technical authors.
• Excellent written English, grammar, sentence structure, and editorial precision.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, MS Teams) and Adobe Acrobat.
• APMP Foundation Certification or equivalent.
• Degree qualification in Business, Engineering, Construction, English, or a related field.
• Professional membership in a relevant institution (e.g., CIOB, ICE, ICES, RICS, APM).
• APMP Practitioner Certification (or actively working towards it)
• Deep sector experience across major transport, tunnelling, energy, utilities, or complex construction and infrastructure frameworks.
• Experience expanding corporate bid processes, content libraries, or knowledge management systems.

About the Role:

An integral part of the Pre-Construction Team, the Senior Bid Writer is a hands-on role responsible for taking writing leadership for allocated complex and strategic bids. The Senior Bid Writer drives narrative development and answer planning, while remaining a primary, active author of critical submission responses. Operating as a trusted writing adviser, they partner closely with Pre-Construction/Bid Managers and collaboratively engage with technical subject matter experts (SMEs) to translate complex operational data into winning submissions. They take ownership of the quality and consistency of written outputs across their allocated bids, including content produced by multiple authors and contributors.

Requirements:

• Leading the end-to-end written response development of high-scoring responses for our most complex, high-value, and strategically important tender submissions.
• Shaping the written narrative, ensuring the core operational strategy and messaging are articulated clearly and persuasively from opportunity launch to submission, with direct ownership of answer planning, storyboarding and the integration of win themes into core responses.
• Synthesising complex engineering data and technical SME inputs into a single, compelling, and consistent customer voice, while taking a hands-on role in drafting highly technical or critical sections.
• Acting as the lead editorial authority on allocated bids, reviewing drafts from other contributors and providing strategic feedback to elevate text quality, compliance and persuasive impact.
• Owning and managing personal writing outputs against strict internal milestones, partnering with Pre-Construction/Bid Managers to ensure review gates are met without compromising on quality.
• Leading and facilitating technical workshops and interviews with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), using targeted questioning to extract unique proof points and differentiate our offer.
• Operating as the principal writing advisor to Pre-Construction/Bid Managers, shaping response structures, layout logic, and content development best practice.
• Mentoring and developing bid writers and operational authors, proactively sharing best practice, conducting peer reviews, and upskilling the wider bidding team.
• Championing continuous improvement within the Pre-Construction Team by optimising bid-writing processes and tools, updating high-quality evidence libraries, and embedding lessons learned from post-tender reviews.
