Job summary

Howden is seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to build and operate an Azure-based data and AI platform. You will work hands-on on Terraform, network design, MLOps pipelines, and DevSecOps patterns daily.

The role focuses on Azure landing zones, Databricks governance, and AI model deployment pipelines, with strong emphasis on security, observability, and cost controls. Hybrid work arrangement in the UK is common.

Qualifications

• 5+ years platform/infrastructure engineering – built production platforms.
• Deep Azure knowledge – networking, IAM, storage, compute, PaaS services.
• Databricks – deployed workspaces, Unity Catalog, cost optimization.
• Infrastructure as Code – Terraform or Bicep; modules and large project structuring.
• CI/CD pipelines – Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions with gates & security scanning.
• Containerization – best practices for app and ML/AI containers.
• Security-first mindset – least privilege, segmentation, defense in depth.
• MLOps fundamentals – training vs inference, versioning, deployment patterns.
• Python and/or PowerShell – automation and tooling.
• Observability stack – distributed tracing, log aggregation.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement Azure landing zones, management groups, and subscription architecture.
• Build hub-spoke networks with proper segmentation and security controls.
• Implement Azure Policy, RBAC, and governance for security and productivity.
• Manage identity and access with Entra ID and service principals.
• Establish monitoring with Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Application Insights.
• Cost management and FinOps to balance security with developer velocity.
• Deploy and configure Azure Databricks with Unity Catalog; CI/CD for notebooks and jobs.
• Work with data engineers on performance optimization and platform capabilities.
• Build ML model deployment pipelines with Azure ML or Databricks MLflow.
• Create self-service tooling and automation; write developer docs.
