We are looking for a Senior AWS Cloud Engineer to join and represent a team dedicated to delivering and managing the AWS Cloud Platform. Your work will ensure the scalability, reliability, security, and efficiency of the environments hosting Sainsbury’s applications.
Role Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Senior AWS Cloud Platform Engineer with a passion for AWS, Infrastructure as Code and automation to join our team. This role focuses on designing, delivering, and operating our AWS Cloud Platform that powers Sainsbury’s Services and Applications. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring our environments are scalable, reliable, secure, and cost-efficient, while driving continuous improvement across our cloud capabilities and help lead on the delivery of best in breed cloud services to Sainsbury’s.
What You’ll Do:
- Build and Run Scalable Infrastructure: Use cutting-edge tools and technologies to continuously deliver robust Cloud Infrastructure through Infrastructure as Code practices. Engage in the design, collaboration with Product Owners, our Engineering Community, Architects and Information Security to ensure that solutions help customers and achieve our business goals and objectives. Discover and recommend ways to improve reliability and efficiency, with a keen eye on Governance and Security.
- AWS Expertise: Strong experience with AWS services and tooling to design, deploy, and manage scalable infrastructure, including the building and management of serverless architectures.
- Passion for Automation: A deep commitment to automation and modern DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines.
- Infrastructure as Code: Hands-on experience with Terraform, CloudFormation, Serverless or similar tools for IaC.
- Tooling and Innovation: Ability to develop custom tools or leverage open-source solutions to enhance platform efficiency and usability.
- Enhance Cloud Platform Capabilities: Develop internal tools to improve platform performance, security, and cost-efficiency, enabling teams to work smarter. Deploy and configure production systems, with a focus on automation, ease of configuration, reduction of human error, repeatability, and security.
- Monitor new features/functionality and assess their operational implications to continuously improve services.
- Ensure Identity and Access Management controls are in place and strictly adhered to.
- Monitor infrastructure by setting appropriate thresholds and react to event-driven alerts appropriately.
- Produce and maintain documentation of support processes & resolutions to known operational issues.
Collaborate Across Teams: Work with engineers, product and service teams across diverse platforms and technologies to create consistent, reliable, and reusable cloud solutions. Collaborate with other DevOps engineers to design, implement, and evolve automated pipelines in the cloud. Maintain a proactive and collaborative mindset to work closely with stakeholders, engineers, and cross-functional teams.
Ensure Operational Excellence: Focus on delivering a platform that meets stringent security, availability, and performance requirements for critical applications. Participate in a 24/7 BAU and on-call rota as required to support our platform and services.
What You Need to Know & Show:
- Strong demonstrable understanding of AWS in an enterprise environment.
- Extensive experience with AWS services such as EC2, S3, RDS, VPC, Lambda, CloudFormation, IAM, CloudWatch, Route 53, and Networking.
- Proficiency in scripting languages, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, NodeJS, ReactJS or similar tooling.
- Substantial experience in Terraform, CloudFormation, AWS CLI/SDK, or similar automation tooling.
- Experience working with Serverless architectures and technologies.
- Solid understanding of cloud networking concepts (VPC, subnets, routing, firewalls, load balancers).
- Experience in CI/CD pipelines, GitHub Actions, CodePipeline, CodeBuild.
- Front-End architecture and development experience with SSR frameworks like React, Angular, or similar libraries.
- Experience with API integration using RESTful and GraphQL.
- Experience with source control tools such as GitHub and GitHub Actions.
- Strong automated testing and code quality assurance using frameworks like Jest, Playwright, Mocha, Cypress.
- Experience with containerisation tools and orchestration platforms like AWS EKS and ECS.
- Understanding of monitoring, security & compliance: Using CloudTrail, CloudWatch, New Relic.
- Experience in planning and implementing cloud disaster recovery strategies.
- Strong troubleshooting skills for complex hybrid cloud issues.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills with cross-functional teams and vendors.
- Awareness of cloud cost optimisation, monitoring, and alerting solutions.
- Proven cloud operations experience with best practice knowledge.
- Strong mentoring skills and workload management to grow peers.
- Ability to architect solutions for highly available, fault-tolerant, scalable cloud environments.
- Good understanding of Service Operations, SRE & ITIL responsibilities.
- Experience with agile methodologies and collaboration tools like Jira and Confluence.
- Ability to define requirements and create solutions that meet business objectives.
- Willingness to participate in 24/7 out-of-hours support.
- Up-to-date knowledge of cloud technology and general IT infrastructure.
- A vision to build reliability and fault tolerance into products and systems.
