This permanent role involves delivering respiratory diagnostic tests in inpatient and outpatient settings and working across sites at Southampton General Hospital and Royal South Hants Hospital.

Qualifications

  • GCSEs (A-C) including English and Mathematics.
  • NVQ3 or equivalent in a relevant subject, or evidence of currently working toward it.
  • Working towards ARTP Accreditation or equivalent.
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development.

Responsibilities

  • Test outpatients in pulmonary function labs and inpatients on the ward.
  • Full training will be provided for the role.
  • Work across multiple sites, travelling between Southampton General Hospital and Royal South Hants Hospital.
  • Report to the Lead Respiratory Physiologist as part of a 7-person team.
  • Manage workload effectively while delivering high-quality diagnostic tests.

Job Title: Senior Assistant Respiratory Physiologist

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team in the Respiratory Physiology Team (Adults) at University Hospitals Southampton as a Physiologist . As a service we provide a wide range of respiratory diagnostic tests in both inpatient and outpatient settings. We are looking for a Senior Assistant Respiratory Physiologist (Band 4) to join the team on a permanent-basis.

Some of the respiratory conditions we cover are: Alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency, Pulmonary Hypertension, Interstitial lung diseases, Cystic Fibrosis and many more. We working closely with several professions including: doctors, medical students, nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists, healthcare assistants and administrators.

You will be reporting to the Lead Respiratory Physiologist and we are a team of 7 Respiratory Physiologists.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

In this role, your key responsibilities will include testing outpatients in the pulmonary function labs or testing inpatients on the ward. Previous experience is not essential as full training will be given. This role involves cross site working so being able to travel independently to either Southampton General Hospital and the Royal South Hants hospital which is home to our Community Diagnostic Centre. Contracted hours are Monday 08:00-16:0, Tuesday-Friday 08:30-16:30.

Qualifications / Training Required
Essential criteria
  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) grade A-C including English and Mathematics
  • NVQ3 or equivalent in a relevant subject, or evidence of currently working toward it
  • Working towards ARTP Accreditation
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development
Desirable criteria
  • Bachelor of Science or other relevant Life Sciences Degree
  • Eligible for the Healthcare Science Register (via the Academy for Healthcare Science), Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists Membership (Voluntary Register or application pending) or equivalent
Previous or relevant experience necessary
Essential criteria
  • Previous experience of delivering front-line patient care within NHS or other healthcare provider.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge in Respiratory Physiology
  • Knowledge of pulmonary function testing and related equipment
  • Experience of participating in research and audits.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate complex concepts to others.
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage and prioritise own workload.

Essential criteria
  • The post requires a combination of frequent light physical effort (carrying 2-10kg equipment); occasional physical effort (moving morbidly obese patients in wheelchairs); and frequent standing, kneeling or sitting in a restricted position
  • Able to deal with exposure to unpleasant working conditions (body odour and verbal aggression)
  • Ability to do shift work if required
  • Ability to work across sites if required
  • Willingness to attend seminars, conferences and educational meetings
