University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Job Title and Contract

Job Title: Cardiac Physiologist

Contract Type: Permanent

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team as a fast-track cath lab and cardiac rhythm management (CRM) physiologist at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS). The successful applicant will be a newly qualified cardiac physiologist or be due to graduate from the practitioner training program later this year.

Technical Cardiology is a department of 80 physiologists, administrators, students, and support colleagues, and you will be joining a team of 19 physiologists specialising in cath lab and CRM. Most full time cardiac physiologists at UHS work four days of 8am-6pm.

Working for our organisation

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. UHS is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.

We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 30% lower than London and 17 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

The first six months in post will be focused on becoming independent at the more basic cath lab procedures and CRM device follow-up.

The second six months will concentrate on more advanced CRM device follow-up and cath lab procedures with a view to joining the on-call service by the end of the first year in post.

All physiologists working within EP/CRM are actively encouraged and assisted to undertake BHRS and/or IBHRE exams and are fully supported with their PDP. We are extensively involved in device trials and research, including becoming the first UK centre to implant the leadless Empower pacemaker in 2022.

CRM device follow-up at UHS incorporates all aspects of post implant care including onsite and remote follow-up of adult and paediatric/ACHD patients. Devices followed up range from simple ILRs through to CRT-Ds and subcutaneous ICDs. We have the largest CIED remote follow-up population in the UK.

Device implants in the cath lab include ILRs; pacemakers (including leadless and conduction system); ICDs (transvenous and extravascular); CRT-P/Ds (CS and endocardial LV leads); complex paediatric/ACHD implants and pulmonary artery monitors. The CRM physiologists also support the regional lead extraction service and surgical epicardial device implants.

We have 5 dedicated cardiac catheter laboratories (with two specialising in CRM). There are five Consultant Electrophysiologists (plus two visiting Consultants from other Trusts) and four Heart Failure Consultants, all of whom implant complex devices. As such, the CIED patient population is set to continue expanding rapidly over the next few years.

Other cath lab procedures at UHS include all aspects of coronary diagnostic and interventional procedures (including 24/7 primary angioplasty), in addition to other emergency procedures such as temporary pacing and pericardiocentesis. We also perform an extensive range of diagnostic EP studies and ablations; heart failure diagnostics and structural intervention including TAVI, MVR, and TVR. We are very fortunate to be one of only a few select centres in the UK to perform paediatric diagnostic and interventional procedures, in addition to ACHD patients.

The post will be particularly suited to PTP students that have enjoyed their cath lab and CRM time on placement and would like to focus on these areas of cardiac physiology post qualification with a view to progressing quickly.

Part-time applicants are welcomed and will be looked at on an individual basis.
