Job summary

Wade Macdonald is working with an established Retail organisation in Wallingford to appoint a Senior Assistant Accountant. You will own key elements of the month-end process and work closely with the Group Financial Controller and senior finance leadership.

The role offers hybrid working, a salary of £40,000 to £45,000, and a pathway to broaden responsibilities as the business grows within a supportive finance team.

Qualifications

• Part-qualified ACCA/ACA or CIMA with month-end experience.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to manage competing deadlines and priorities.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of key elements of the month-end close and ensure deadlines are met.
• Record revenue across online sales channels with checks and reconciliations.
• Prepare customer invoices for online and wholesale activity and act as finance contact for customers.
• Calculate and post accruals and prepayments to recognise expenditure in the correct period.
• Maintain supporting schedules for prepayments and other balance sheet items.
• Process intercompany transactions and recharges.
• Manage payroll-related accounting entries and reconcile with the external payroll provider.
• Prepare VAT returns across group entities.
• Maintain fixed asset records and monthly depreciation.
• Assist senior finance colleagues with additional projects and wider business requirements.

Operating at significant scale, the organisation has continued to grow and is now looking to strengthen its finance team to support its next stage of development.

About the Job

This is a broad Senior Assistant Accountant position within a small finance team, reporting to the Group Financial Controller and working closely with senior finance leadership. You will take ownership of significant elements of the month-end process, helping ensure accurate and timely financial information while maintaining appropriate financial controls.

Duties will include:

• Taking responsibility for key elements of the month-end close, ensuring transactions and journals are completed accurately and within agreed deadlines.
• Recording revenue generated through multiple online sales channels and carrying out appropriate checks and reconciliations.
• Preparing customer invoices for online and wholesale activity and acting as a finance contact for relevant customers.
• Calculating and posting accruals and prepayments to ensure expenditure is recognised within the appropriate accounting period.
• Maintaining supporting schedules for prepayments and other balance sheet areas.
• Processing intercompany transactions and recharges.
• Managing payroll-related accounting entries and reconciliations, working with the external payroll provider where required.
• Preparing VAT returns across relevant group entities.
• Maintaining fixed asset records and processing monthly depreciation.
• Assisting senior finance colleagues with additional projects and wider business requirements.

About the Successful Applicant

You will be an ACCA, ACA or CIMA part-qualified accountant or finalist with practical month-end experience and strong attention to detail. You will be comfortable managing competing deadlines, taking ownership of your workload and communicating effectively with colleagues at different levels. A proactive approach and the ambition to broaden your responsibilities as the organisation grows will be particularly important.
