Job summary

Historic England in Portsmouth is seeking a Senior Archaeologist to lead post-excavation coordination within the Archaeology & Science Department. The role involves overseeing assessment through publication and archive for current and legacy projects, with a focus on strategic aims.

You will coordinate internal and external specialists, ensure timely delivery, and contribute expert input to projects. The post supports flexible/hybrid working and offers a strong benefits package and development

  • Proven experience of successful budget management, and procurement of equipment and services
  • Sound knowledge of the context of archaeological practice in England
  • Ability to coordinate diverse project teams or specialists, and to motivate strong performance
  • Recognition as an expert in archaeological post-excavation techniques or in one or more specialisms

What you will be doing

This is an opportunity to work on some of the most important sites in the country and to participate in strategic cross-sector projects aimed at improving archaeological practice and supporting archaeological heritage management.

You will manage archaeological post-excavation capability within the Archaeology & Science Department to support the strategic aims of Historic England. You will ensure that current and legacy archaeological excavation projects progress through post-excavation, from assessment to publication and archive.
