Job summary

Scale is seeking a Staff Applied AI Engineer to raise the bar for how AI is built, governed, and evaluated across the Global Public Sector team. You will define standards for responsible AI, model governance, and production MLOps used by multiple engineers and clients.

You will architect high-risk AI systems, lead incident resolution related to model safety and data integrity, and coach senior engineers while shaping the technical roadmap for the domain.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of engineering experience owning AI/ML systems in production.
• Experience judging training data quality, selecting adaptation methods, evaluating fine-tuning results, and balancing cost, latency, and quality.

Responsibilities

• Define standards for responsible AI, model governance, and production MLOps adopted broadly across the Global Public Sector team.
• Build or validate high-risk parts of strategic AI systems and set standards for other teams.
• Architect AI systems to prevent systemic failure and lead incident resolution tied to model safety or data integrity.
• Build reusable AI capabilities such as production-ready agent implementations, fine-tuned models, or evaluation methodologies for others to build on.
• Advise on new AI developments, help set the technical roadmap for the domain.
• Serve as senior technical partner to client leadership on AI strategy.
• Coach engineers, delegate ownership of technical domains, and build scalable safer AI practices.
• Contribute to recruiting and represent Scale's AI work externally.
