Senior AI Software Engineer (Research and Development), Culham

Company: Luffy AI is an innovative high-tech startup specializing in adaptive neural networks for industrial control and robotics (Physical AI). We develop 'Micro AI' controllers, also known as TinyML, trained in simulation on digital twins and deployed on existing hardware with minimal footprint and no internet connection.

Our networks leverage neuroplasticity to adapt continuously, enabling breakthroughs in applying AI to control systems. Our technology enhances productivity, energy efficiency, and extends the capabilities of industrial automation, supporting Industry 4.0 in sectors like metals, glass, cement, electric motors, and robotics.

Location: Culham Science Centre near Oxford, UK, with a satellite office in Bristol.

The Role: We seek a passionate Senior AI Software Engineer to collaborate with our CTO and AI Architect on our proprietary AI stack, improving operational tools and pioneering R&D projects to enhance our technology. Your work will involve neural network engines, genetic algorithms, and training frameworks.

This role demands broad software engineering expertise, teamwork, and familiarity with AI concepts such as neuroplasticity, recurrent neural networks, and reinforcement learning frameworks like OpenAI Gym. Skills in Python, C/C++, and GPU programming are advantageous. As an early team member, you'll influence company direction and tailor your role to your interests.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop proprietary AI training and inference frameworks.
  • Drive R&D to improve our AI stack.
  • Engage with academia and the AI community through collaborations and conferences.
  • Work with engineering and commercial teams to develop new features.
  • Contribute to internal software libraries.
  • Maintain high code quality and professional practices.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • BSc in Computer Science or related field.
  • 3-5 years professional software development experience.
  • Experience with Reinforcement Learning.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard practices, testing, version control, CI.
  • Experience with agile methodologies, especially Scrum.
  • Master’s or PhD preferred.
  • Strong skills in C, C++, or Rust.
  • Experience with genetic algorithms, neuroevolution, neuroplasticity, recurrent neural networks.
  • Familiarity with reinforcement learning frameworks like OpenAI Gym.
  • Experience in high-performance computing or software optimization.
  • Excellent English communication skills.
  • Experience leading agile processes, ideally as Scrum Master.
