Job summary

Cheerful Monster Limited, a London-based AI-focused software studio, seeks a senior product engineer to own client outcomes end-to-end from discovery to production.

You'll work in a small, mission-driven pod, collaborating directly with clients, designing systems in Elixir, Phoenix, and LiveView, and guiding architecture decisions while balancing risk and delivery speed. This role is based in Canary Wharf with some flexible work.

Qualifications

• Substantial experience building and operating software with Elixir and Phoenix.
• Strong grasp of OTP, supervision, concurrency, Ecto, and relational data modelling.
• Ability to spot generated Elixir that compiles but is unidiomatic or poorly structured.
• Comfort working directly with clients, shaping ambiguous work, and taking responsibility after deployment.

Responsibilities

• Turn ambiguous client needs into clear product and technical direction, separating the outcome a client needs from the first solution suggested.
• Design and build production systems with Elixir, Phoenix, and LiveView across domains, data, interfaces, integrations, testing, deployment and observability.
• Decide what to do yourself, what to delegate to agents, and what evidence is needed before the result can be trusted.
• Run investigations in parallel, discard generated work when needed, and recognise when AI is not the right tool for the job.
• Review and develop other engineers, helping establish context capture, structure of work, and increasing autonomy.
• Contribute to our shared engineering practice and the development harnesses that support it.
• Help rediscover the craft and joy in software development as tools evolve.
