Job summary

BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness is seeking an experienced Assistant Chief Engineer (ACE) for Structural Engineering (Hull & Outfit) to lead the design authority for major systems on the Dreadnought programme.

The ACE will partner with ESO within JDA, chair critical reviews, manage risks, and ensure compliant, fit-for-purpose designs across the whole boat. This is a progression opportunity within the Maritime – Submarines division.

Qualifications

• Chartered status is essential.
• Familiar with structural design standards and calculations.
• Knowledge of platform structure (pressure hull, bulkheads, tanks).
• Knowledge of structural manufacturing processes and NDE techniques.
• Knowledge of coating systems and application standards.
• Knowledge of installation and tiling systems.

Responsibilities

• Work with Engineering Delivery Managers to ensure designs meet requirements.
• Collaborate with ESO within JDA to guide engineering delivery teams.
• Lead and chair reviews (D&IR, System/ Major System/ Whole Boat).
• Coordinate technical inputs into phase reviews and technical bid reviews.
• Support risk/opportunity review at system, function, and program levels.
• Manage complex inter-domain issues through design finalization and build/commissioning.
• Ensure technical authority delegation to SQEP personnel as needed.
• Reuse and exploit capability across future platforms per roadmap.
• Perform certification planning to produce interim and final certificates of design.
