SEND Teaching Assistant
Full-time, Temporary initially with the potential to be permanent, September 2025 Start
Your New Company
Hays Education is working in partnership with a forward-thinking secondary school in Tameside that is launching a brand-new Special Educational Needs (SEN) unit in September 2025. This development will provide specialist support for students with additional needs, including autism spectrum condition (ASC), speech and language difficulties, and social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs. The school is committed to inclusive education and creating a nurturing environment where every student can thrive.
Your New Job
As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will support students within the new SEN unit, working closely with the SENCO, class teachers, and external professionals. Your responsibilities include providing 1:1 and small group support, assisting with classroom activities, promoting positive behaviour, and helping students access the curriculum in ways that suit their individual learning styles. This is a full-time, term-time-only role starting in September, with potential for long-term or permanent opportunities.
What You'll Need to Succeed
Experience working with children or young people with special educational needs, ideally within a school or educational setting, is preferred. A strong understanding of autism, communication strategies such as PECS or Makaton, and a patient, empathetic approach are essential. Being a team player, confident in building positive relationships, and committed to supporting inclusive education are important. A relevant qualification in supporting teaching and learning or SEN is desirable but not essential.
What You'll Get in Return
You will join a supportive and welcoming school community during an exciting growth phase. The role offers the chance to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people with additional needs. Benefits include ongoing training, professional development, a collaborative environment, and the possibility of a long-term or permanent position. Competitive pay rates are offered.
