Job description

SEMH Teaching Assistant – Sheffield

Sheffield, South Yorkshire
Pay dependent on experience and qualifications

Looking for a SEND role where you can really make a difference? This could be it.

We’re working with Sheffield schools who are looking for calm, compassionate and skilled Teaching Assistants to support pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. No two days are ever the same, but every day you’ll be helping a young person feel safe, supported and ready to learn.

What you’ll be doing:
  • Providing 1:1 and small group support, tailored to each pupil’s individual needs.

  • Supporting behaviour management, record keeping and pastoral care.

  • Assisting with communication, regulation, and classroom participation.

  • Working closely with teachers, SENCOs and families to ensure a joined-up approach.

  • Creating an inclusive, positive space where all pupils can thrive.

What we’re looking for:
  • Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEMH or additional needs.

  • Excellent communication and patience.

  • A flexible, person-centred approach — understanding that one size never fits all.

  • De-escalation skills and Team Teach training (desirable, but not essential).

  • A calm, reliable presence that pupils can trust.

What you’ll get from Protocol Education:
  • Weekly PAYE pay — no umbrella companies.

  • Fast and simple registration process.

  • Access to free CPD including SEND, Thrive and behaviour management.

  • A dedicated consultant who knows SEND and will support you every step of the way.
