Job summary

Quantum Scholars in Minehead is seeking a patient, experienced SEND Maths Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one tuition for a secondary-aged learner in-person.

The successful candidate will bring strong Maths knowledge and experience supporting learners with SEND/SEMH needs, adapting teaching to individual needs, and creating a calm, encouraging learning environment that builds confidence in Maths.

Qualifications

• Strong Maths subject knowledge at secondary level.
• Experience teaching or tutoring Maths.
• Experience supporting learners with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
• A patient, calm, flexible and empathetic approach.

Responsibilities

• Provide personalised one-to-one Maths tuition to a secondary-aged learner in Minehead.
• Support the learner across the Secondary Maths curriculum, including GCSE where appropriate.
• Identify gaps in mathematical knowledge and provide targeted support.
• Break down complex concepts into manageable steps and adapt pace to learning needs.
• Support development of numeracy, reasoning and problem-solving skills.
• Prepare and support GCSE revision and exam technique where appropriate.

Quantum Scholars are looking for a patient, supportive and experienced SEND Maths Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one tuition to a young person in Minehead.

The successful tutor will have strong Maths subject knowledge and experience supporting secondary-aged learners with SEND and/or SEMH needs. You will be confident adapting your teaching style, pace and resources to meet individual learning needs, while creating a calm and positive environment where the learner can build confidence and engage with Maths.

Experience supporting young people with anxiety, school avoidance, disengagement or challenging behaviour would be highly desirable.

This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.

The role may involve:

• Providing personalised one-to-one Maths tuition to a secondary-aged learner.
• Supporting the learner across the Secondary Maths curriculum, including GCSE where appropriate.
• Identifying gaps in mathematical knowledge and providing targeted support.
• Breaking down complex mathematical concepts into manageable and accessible steps.
• Adapting teaching methods, resources and lesson pace to suit individual learning needs.
• Supporting the development of numeracy, mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
• Supporting understanding of mathematical terminology and applying mathematical concepts to different contexts.
• Supporting GCSE revision, exam preparation and exam technique where appropriate.
• Creating a calm, structured and supportive learning environment.
• Supporting learners who may have experienced barriers to mainstream education.
• Helping the learner develop confidence, resilience and independence.
• Encouraging engagement and positive attitudes towards Maths and learning.
• Using the learner's interests and strengths to make sessions engaging and accessible.
• Supporting learners who may experience SEMH needs, anxiety or challenging behaviour.
• Using positive behaviour strategies and appropriate de-escalation approaches where required.
• Monitoring progress and providing appropriate feedback.
• Building a positive and trusting relationship with the learner.
• Working collaboratively with parents/carers and other professionals involved in the learner's education.
• Maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.
• Following safeguarding procedures and promoting the welfare of the young person.

Essential requirements:

• Strong Maths subject knowledge at secondary level.
• Experience teaching or tutoring Maths.
• Experience supporting learners with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
• Experience providing one-to-one or personalised educational support is desirable.
• Ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet individual learning needs.
• Experience supporting learners who may have barriers to mainstream education is desirable.
• Experience supporting challenging behaviour would be highly desirable.
• A patient, calm, flexible and empathetic approach.
• Ability to build positive and trusting relationships with young people.
• Confidence supporting learners who may be reluctant, anxious or disengaged from education.
• Strong communication and organisational skills.
• Reliable and consistent approach to work.
