Job summary

Step Into Teaching Limited is seeking a Graduate Teaching Assistant to support pupils in specialist school settings in Derby. The role focuses on SEN, psychology, education or related fields, with no prior SEN experience required beyond a genuine desire to help.

You will work under the guidance of teachers to support learning and behaviour in a safe environment. The position is based in Derby, with a 5 October 2026 posting date and a start in October/November 2026.

Qualifications

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required.
• Ability to work well in a team and remain calm under pressure.

Responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils.
• Assist pupils to access learning and participate in class activities.

We are looking for graduates to join specialist school settings in Derby, supporting children and young people with additional needs.

This is a particularly rewarding role and could be a great fit for graduates with an interest in SEN, psychology, education, therapy, social care or teaching.

You don't need previous SEN experience. What's most important is that you're patient, caring, resilient and genuinely want to support young people.

The role will involve:

• Providing 1:1 and small-group support
• Helping pupils access their learning
• Supporting communication and social development
• Building confidence and independence
• Encouraging positive behaviour
• Working closely with teachers and support staff
• Creating a safe and supportive environment for pupils

The ideal candidate will:

• Have a degree – this is essential
• Be caring, patient and empathetic
• Have excellent communication skills
• Be confident working as part of a team
• Be calm and consistent
• Have a genuine interest in supporting young people
• Have previous SEN experience (desirable, but not essential)
• Have a driving licence (desirable but not essential)
